The FBI and NCsoft North America have worked together to take down an illegal service that allowed around 50,000 (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=11786)Lineage II users to play the game on unauthorized servers. The year-long investigation by the FBI ultimately resulted in multiple raids from Virginia all the way out to California. The federal search warrants were served on the owners of L2Extreme, the people responsible for running the fraudulent service.

A former statement on the L2Extreme web site claims that there were more than a half million registered users that subscribed to the service.

"This group in particular was downloading our version of the Lineage II software from our servers, costing us close to a million dollars in realized bandwidth costs during the period it was operational," NCsoft North America alleges.

A quick look at what was formerly the L2Extreme web site has the following message: "This site has been seized by the federal bureau of investigation." ...Except the FBI's message is in obnoxiously bold characters added for emphasis. Furthermore, a warning against the "unauthorized reproduction or distribution of copyrighted work" is located at the bottom of the page.

I was on their PHP team. Though I never really did any work since their admin was a dick.
I was also a GM on another L2 private server which is now closing down, as is many others.

Sad day indeed...
