Hmm, it appears Sony wants a piece of Gameboy's action. Check this (http://money.cnn.com/2003/05/13/technology/e3_psp/index.htm) out. Here are some of the highlights.

Starting in June, Sony will sell a revamped system that will be bundled with its popular online adaptor starting in June. The upgraded PS2 will continue to sell for $199.

The upgraded machine will also offer the ability to play re-writable DVDs and will offer progressive scan technology, which will improve the visual quality of movies watched on the console. The machine will also be quieter than current models.

I like this idea, though a PS3 announcement would have been better. I doubt anyone will buy a 2nd ps2 to get progressive scan and DVD-R capability. However for a first time buyer, this gives Sony a jump in the rankings.

Regarding the new Playstation Portable (PSP):

The PSP will utilize a new proprietary storage disk, offer a backlit screen and have a rechargeable battery. It will also offer 3D graphics and sound and will measure approximately 4.5 inches and offer a wide-screen viewing format. Additionally, the machine will come equipped with a USB 2.0 port, allowing high speed data transfers and will have a slot for Sony's memory stick data storage technology.

Hmm, wonder how many of the bells and whistles will be used in the final product. :)

Also check this (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/news/news_6027155.html) out, regarding Nvidia's new video card, which they believe will take the crown back from ATI.

Like ATI's Radeon 9700 and 9800, the 5900 features a 256-bit memory bus to roughly double the amount of data that can be transferred to and from the card's memory. This more than offsets the slightly lower clock speeds of the 5900 as compared with the 5800. The chip's core will run at 450MHz and the memory will be running at 425MHz (effectively 850MHz). The chip is being manufactured on a dense .13-micron process.

Sounds like it might be good, though at $499, I don't see lots of these leaving the warehouse anytime soon. Another downer is that it takes up TWO expansion slots. Damn, things are getting heavy. :)

It is my understanding that a new Bond game will follow ever year, as long as the success of Agent Under Fire and Nightfire follow too.

Wow, the doom3 coverage in that quick-cam is pretty cool. Wonder what the specs are on the demo system. I hear this is going to require a screaming fast machine. B)

Last post for the evening.. some news from the Xbox front. (http://money.cnn.com/2003/05/12/technology/e3_microsoft/index.htm)

It was Xbox Live that took center stage at the press conference, as Microsoft hopes to broaden its console's appeal beyond pure gamers. Starting later this year, an enhanced version of Xbox Live will beef up the service's community features, letting subscribers find friends even when they're not signed in to Xbox Live. They'll be able to send notifications to friends using PDAs, PCs and cell phones -- any device enabled with MSN Messenger.

Last Thursday, Microsoft announced the pricing structure for Xbox Live subscription renewals. A 12-month subscription will cost $49.99 and subscriptions will be available for $4.99 per month. The company will also offer two-month free trials of Xbox Live with select games.

It appears Bill Gates is pushing the Xbox into the online realm in a big way. I'm looking forward to hearing more. B)

More news from E3: Nintendo dismisses Sony Game Boy rival -- read it here. (http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/fun.games/05/14/nintendo.sony.reut/index.html)

Nintendo's response:

"The fact that they are putting a lot of features into it (PSP) is very Sony-like, but at the moment we dominate the handheld market and there is no need for us to be overly concerned right now," Iwata said Tuesday at a press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the video game industry trade show. "We will continue to do what we do best."

More news on the way as it arrives. B) B) B)

Playboy is making the jump to video games, read it here. (http://money.cnn.com/2003/05/12/commentary/game_over/e3_playboy/index.htm)

Some details:

Including nudity is something that's pretty much expected when you're putting together a Playboy game. Still, it's bound to polarize people and adds an element of risk for Arush and Cyberlore. The industry, after all, is still cleaning up the public relations disaster that was "BMX XXX", a much-reviled title that blended DVD-quality strip club footage and a biking video game for little discernable reason.

Sounds like it could be good, though they are marketing it similar to the Sims. Either way, Playboy is no joke. I'm sure they won't put out a bad product, though its a long way from virtual sex. :o ;)

More news from E3, today from Atari. Read the complete article here. (http://www.gamespot.com/gamecube/action/enterthematrix/news_6027618.html)

"Atari has been reborn with a lineup of the most entertaining and wide-reaching video games available on the market," said Bruno Bonnell, chairman and CEO of Atari. "By joining Hollywood and entertainment partnerships with the industry's best collection of developers, we have positioned Atari as a leader in our industry and an innovator among publishers.

Here are some of the bigger titles coming from Atari in the near future:
Enter the Matrix (PS2, Xbox, GC, PC)
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (PS2, Xbox)
Terminator 3: War of the Machines (PC)
Mission: Impossible - Operation Surma

Sounds like Atari still won't quit. Gotta love 'em! B)

Rounding out the Atari news today, the big announcement was for Unreal Tournament 4. Here is the official details. (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/ut2004/news_6027581.html)

Atari has announced that a new edition of Unreal Tournament will be out later this year that will be compatible with Unreal Tournament 2003 and will include a bunch of new gameplay modes, new maps, voice chat, and other gameplay enhancements. UT 2004 isn't exactly a sequel or a stand-alone expansion. In addition to the significant features and the multiplayer content in UT 2004, it will also include the original Unreal Tournament 2003 content and the freely downloadable bonus packs released by Digital Extremes and Epic Games earlier this year.

Interesting direction Atari is going in.

There are a handful of notable new features in store for the new edition. Perhaps the most significant addition is built-in voice chat that actually takes advantage of 3D audio hardware, so players can hear the shouts of those around them correctly positioned in 3D space.

Last but not least, publisher Take Two (Grand Theft Auto fame) critized Sony today for not dropping the price of their console to $150 instead of the current $179. Check out the article here. (http://money.cnn.com/2003/05/15/news/companies/e3_taketwo/index.htm)

"Like all publishers, we were looking for a $50 price cut, but Sony wants to maximize its revenue," Jeff Lapin told CNN/Money in an interview at E3, the annual trade show of the video game industry. "I am hopeful that by the end of the year we'll see the $149 price point – but I was disappointed we didn't see a drop to $149 here."

Sony Online debuts all-access service for $21.99. Get the details here. (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/everquest/news_6028270.html)

Sony Online Entertainment has announced an all-in-one monthly subscription option called All Access. The $21.99 monthly fee for All Access will include subscriptions to all of the online games that Sony Online publishes, including EverQuest, PlanetSide, EverQuest Online Adventures, the Station Pass, and the upcoming EverQuest II, which is scheduled for the fall. Sony Online's premium games normally have subscription fees of $12.99 or $9.99 each. Once the All Access offer begins next week, it will let participating players to have one account for all the games.

While this makes for a great announcement, I'm still not impressed with anything that Sony has given us in the online market. Xbox reigns supreme for online market share. We'll see where this one goes. B)

Gamecube to come packaged with Gameboy Advance. Details here. (http://www.gamespot.com/gba/news/news_6028249.html)

Nintendo has announced that it will start selling a GameCube bundle that comes packed with the Game Boy Advance Player, which lets users play Game Boy Advance games on a TV. The bundle will hit retail outlets on June 23 in North America and will sell for $149.99.

There is no details regarding the Gameboy Advance hardware, though I'm sure they will be giving you the Gameboy Advance, and not the Gameboy Advance SP. Sounds like a ploy to move their leftover hardware and to sell more software. You may not have been impressed with Nintendo, but they continue to make a financial killing every year. ;)

wow, thats dirt cheap...

the game cube sells for 150 normally doesnt it? or did i miss a price drop? so thats like giving out a gba for free? nice deal.... they are still great, i like them better the then sp, as i think thats too small, the layout/size of the gba is much bettter, ergonomic... the sp, while backlight, doesnt feel as good... and u can mod ur gbas with lights, etc... to fix the lighting issues if u really feel the need to.

gg nintendo... way to keep it real

No, you're right Schmiggy, the price remained the same, they are just giving you more for your money now. I haven't purchased the SP gameboy yet, though I'm sure I will. i think they will only be including the gameboy advance player. not the actual gameboy advance system. the gba player just lets you hook up a gba to the gamecube so you can play GBA games on your tv.

A quick interview with Nintendo's gaming mastermind Shigeru Miyamoto (Super Mario 64 and other huge hits) and gamespy.com. He even tells his opinions on the Grand Theft Auto series. Read it here. (http://www.gamespy.com/e32003/interview/gcn/1002437/)

Regarding taking the Mario games into 3D: One thing that has hurt the Mario games ... Taking them into 3D, while it has expanded the worlds, has shrunk the user base. By going into 3D the games have become more complicated. Before that, the Mario games were the type of thing that anybody could pick up and play very easily. By going into the 3D world, we have limited who that game is accessible to.

An interesting read. B)

Gameboy Advance video players are being designed by two different companies. Full article here. (http://www.gamers.com/news/1384579)

AM3's storage format can handle more than just video, so publishers can release many different types of content -- TV animation, digital comicbooks, music videos, karaoke tracks, and other forms of entertainment. And since the SmartMedia format is widely available, AM3 plans to set up convenience-store kiosks where users can slot in their own SmartMedia cards to download whatever they'd like to watch.

It is rumored that it will be capable of holding up to 40 minutes of video.

This game does look good, the shadows are especially realistic. A link that streams video? Great find. B)

Here is some info regarding XIII, the new first person shooter from Ubi Soft. Its going to be the first of its kind, done completely with Cel-shaded graphics. Also it will feature a comic book style of play with "panels".

XIII will have a "sixth sense" meter that will alert you to nearby enemies, though you may also see visual depictions of nearby characters, such as the words "Tap tap tap" floating in the air to indicate enemy footsteps (much like in a comic book). The game will have various comic book-style elements that will help progress the story, provide you with clues, and provide additional dramatic effect. For instance, skillfully taking down an enemy soldier with a well-placed shot may cause a series of cartoon-style panels to pop up in the top-left corner of the screen, indicating the enemy taking the hit, shouting "Ugh!," and falling to the ground. The screen will even change if you're too close to a grenade when it discharges; the explosion will leave a residual ringing sound (to simulate the ringing in your ears), and the screen display will briefly blur until you can recover.

More info here. (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/action/xiii/preview_6027495.html) B)

I had to give this thread a bump. Its been overrun by 30 Vice City threads, all asking the same thing. :-"
