So im trying to figure out what would be the best investment for a new tv that would be going into the family room or basement, both places are locations in which tv is watched frequently

it comes down to Plasma Vs DLP because LCD gets way to expensive when you get into the larger tv's

so speak some reccomendations

my research so far has pointed to DLP because its best bang for buck currently although after certain amount of hours you do need to change the lamp...

You can get a nice large LCD within that budget.

If 40" is big enough, try the Sony KDL40V2500 - it's 1080P and has an awesome picture. Even looks great as a PC monitor. You can find it under 2k.

If you need bigger, try the Samsung LN-S4695D - it's 46" 1080P within your budget.

If you have to have larger than 46" I think you will have to go with 720P LCD or Plasma, or DLP.

There's also LCD rear projection. Very similar to DLP pricing and sizes.

What screen size are you looking for?

Your 4 choices I believe would be plasma, flat panel lcd , rear projection dlp or rear projection lcd. They all have there benefits and disadvantages...I just bought this http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start?ProductSKU=KDF55E2000&Dept=tvvideo&CategoryName=tv_ProjectionTVs_RearProjection_55to80TVs
I'm very pleased with it so far...
