I just installed the most recent "GART" driver for my chipset and was wondering what its purpose is, and is it necessary?

If it aint broken don't fix it :)

''GART is the chipset hardware that the operating system uses to correlate locked pages onto physical memory. AGP devices can use these correlations.''

This definition doesn't make it easier does it ? :)

Sometimes updating a (gart) driver will decrease performance in some cases instead of increasing it!

for example read this

http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=1241

But most of the time an updated driver is better then the previous one. You should read which problems have been adressed in the readme file or on the download site and decide if it applies to you.
