If anyone can resolve this problem, I'll consider them to be my personal saviour and be eternally grateful:

I have a well spec'd PC running XP SP2 and 8meg connection (wired).

Basically, I have that problem that everyone using SP2 has with the amount of open ports it allows, but I have downloaded and applied the eventID patch that is supposed to fix the problem, but I still cannot exeed download speed of around 20kbs. I'm convinced that it is not down to my ISP, as I used to use a PC running windows 98 with excellent connection speeds. I have disabled my firewall and also disabled automatic updates, as they set the number of conncurrently open ports back to 10 every time an update is applied (or so I've been told). It's pissing me off immesnsely - such a fat connection with such meagre speeds!

The problem persists regardless of how well seeded the torrent is (I generally use torrentspy), and regardless of the program I use (bit tornado, ABC and eMule have all been tried).
Am I missing something simple?
Any suggestions would be very gratefully received!

Thank you.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not using a router.

what firewall are you using?

it's possible that your isp is throttling your torrent speeds? I know you said you're convinced it's not your isp so only a suggestion.

you probably know already to have protocol encryption turned on.

Protocol encryption? Tell me more..!

what firewall are you using?

The one that comes with XP.

Protocol encryption is in the prefences of your client.

get utorrent from http://www.utorrent.com/

click on Windows Firewall, on the Exceptions tab you have to add your client if it is not already listed.

If it is not listed then you go to Add Program then look in the list that appears, if the program is not there click Browse and then find the executable of the client in the new window that pops up. In this case it is utorrent-1.5-beta.exe

Thanks for everyone's help so far. I have installed uTorrent and have configured it as you said, but I'm still getting an average speed of about 10kbs on a torrent with 71 seeds and 71 peers!

What the fuck is wrong with this thing?!

Alien5

have you got a green tick at the bottom of utorrent?

Yes.

What port are you using? Select random port in uTorrent because a lot of times if its the ISP trottling your speed, they only do it in the default BT range of ports

Alien5

in utorrent click preferences - Connection and Choose a port between 49152 through 65535, those are the reccomended ports.

if you've installed utorrent, you need to enable protocol encryption:

CTRL + P > BitTorrent > Protocol Encryption
set to Enabled, check allow incoming legacy connections

I'm still getting an average speed of about 10kbs on a torrent with 71 seeds and 71 peers!

I generally use torrentspy

that's most likely the problem.

enable the encryption, restart utorrent, then try downloading an openoffice torrent from here:
http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/

you should get a very high speed on it.

It's on random - still shit.

What's openoffice?

Alien5

its just some small office app, you can delete it after. its just a test - he said start to download it to test your speed. while it downloads look at what speed you're getting. if its max speed then everything is set up correctly.

Ok, am now downloading that app, along with the original file I was downloading. I'm getting about 25kbs on the original file and about 5kbs on the one you told me to download. Better, but far from the speeds my line's capable of. Thanks for your help so far, but any other suggestions?

im running out of ideas :( if you have a green tick in utorrent then you should be connectable.

did you enable encryption in the options, like was advised?

you should get way more than 5KB on the openoffice torrents, they've got dedicated servers on them. within one minute of letting it run, I was getting 200KB down.

The Masked Uni

I've done everything specified. Now downloading a different file from openoffice and getting 25 tops.

Maybe I should concede defeat?

which ISP are you using, is it a canadian or uk one? when traffic shaping is in place, they usually limit speeds to around 25KB max. if the encryption didn't get around it, I don't know what else to advise.

to isolate this problem to just filesharing, stop everything that's accessing the net, and run a speed test:
http://www.speedtest.net/
http://www.testmy.net/
http://www.dslreports.com/stest

make sure you're getting the advertised speeds your ISP offers.

speedtest.net says my dl speed is 1725kbs and my upload speed is 378 kbs.

Is that good or bad?

lysine
12-04-2006, 11:32 PM
it's certainly not the 8MB connection you described in your first post.

1725 Kbps is 210.57 kB/s or 1.73 Mbps

378 Kbps is 46.14 kB/s or 0.38 Mbps

you never answered what ISP you're on.

OK first you might not relieze this but your modem might need to have its portsforwarded and if you can provide your modem model # I might be of more help.

Also if you are using any kind of internet security type apps that could a problem so pleas give us that info too if you are using something like MaCafee internet security or something like that.

My ISP is Eclipse. As for forwarding ports on my modem, I'm open to ideas, but I've never had to do that before (when I was using Win 98). I don't know the model number as I'm at work right now, but It's a Speedtouch one. I can tell you exactly which one later if need be.

Thanks :)

according to the bad isp list (http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_ISPs), your ISP is on it. looks like you're out of luck. the wiki advises you set the following options:
Protocol Encryption - Outgoing > Forced
uncheck the box Allow incoming legacy connections

give that a try and see if you get any better results. after a while, if you notice the speeds dropped alot lower, re-check the incoming legacy box.

edit: ok masked uni, I read some posts on a uk site, and it doesn't look good for you. here are a few of the comments from people on Eclipse:

Must admit they told me a pack of lies too. Adament they are not throttling me but how come my speeds are now around 30kBs.

But 20-30kb/s download on any P2P network for the past 2 months constantly surely mean they are limiting me someway? Hell even others have the same problem up and down the country.

After nearly 3years of service i'm seeing traffic management at its best, all P2P has been limited to 30kbps. what a shame, i really couldn't fault the service i have had from them in the last few years apart from these past few weeks and i really am sad to leave them but after a bit of searching i've found a new ISP

Eclipse Fooking CRAP!! - NOW ROCK BOTTOM!!

Currently i can confirm that i am downloading at the rate of 25KB/s and uploading at 53 kB/s.

there's also a ton of threads about it here:
http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=eclipse

you should change your ISP to something different.
