I'm looking for some hard disk encryption software for my laptop - preferably one that can protect the windows partion aswell as my external hard disk.

I've seen a few tools like this http://www.guardianedge.com/products/Encryption_Anywhere/Hard_Disk/index.html which seems good for the job but it seems aimed at large corporate setups.

Also is for example 448 blowfish encrpt almost impossible to hack if it's protected with a good password? Can you be 'forced' to unencrpt a drive by the authorities?

Best Regards

Would recommend you PGP Desktop. Encrypts every partition on you drive. You have to use password @ boot.

You can also make PGP disks. Virtual disks you mount. PGP zip for small files, self extracting or not.

You wont find anything more secure than PGP.

blowfish is very strong, pretty much impossible to crack with all the worlds computing power before the sun burns out is a favourite saying of the encryption community. The stronger the encryption the more cpu intensive it is to actually decode though, so the slower your pc will run.

Its all about the level of security you need. If its only a few photos maybe some bank records and your porn stash then the most simple encryption will be fine. goverment agencies or banks on the other hand should use stronger.

if your ever caught just say you don't remember the password, they're not allowed to torture and since what you've done isn't that bad they're not going to go to the trouble of doing so... :P

Actually in the u.k its a criminal offence to not hand over any passkeys to encrypted files. If they have accused you of possesing child porn and you refuse to hand over the keys for any encrypted files then it is taken that the files are indeed child porn.

Then I'm NOT going to move to U.K... In Norway you don't have to hand over any passwords etc. in ANY case, and thank god for that otherwise there would be much point of having the encryption as you would possibly risk jail because of "not co-operating" with the authorities anyway and make them use more time/resources.

There is also something like 3 months or so, then police have to give you the stuff back.
