Virtual Dub Mod (must be the mod version) will load and play vob's. But unlike Vlc player it can also save them as avi, if you select full processing under video and then select divx or xvid as the compression, and its also free. This comes in handy if you want to edit the video or join vob's together once they have been converted to avi.
