Format Hd, Without Loosing Memory

evertime I have formated my HD I loose something, I have been using XP Home. I want to format again but cannot find if there is a better way than doing it from CD-ROM

Technically speaking no. The data is not erased.

But in general, yes, when someone formats their hard drive they should not be wanting the data anymore.

My suggestion is any files you want to keep, make a copy (cd etc.).

exactly, thats my question for so long but I assumed the times my HD was "erased" with manufacture support on the phone they were telling me one way but not another.. ;)
ok...this pc I am typing on has a HD. The HD I am speaking of on this pc has in the past been through a format. I have always belived Format left nothing myself but from the 2 times before I have seen my GB go way down.
Out of the box I it was 120GB
now(2 formats) 109GB.
Phone Support was telling how to go about it. I can only assume there is more than one way to format a HD.

Out of the box I it was 120GB
now(2 formats) 109GB.

Your hard drive is fuctioning normally.

The final available disk space will never be 120GB in windows. The disk space is calculated in hexadecimal by the disk manufacturer. When converted there will be less in real bytes. There is also alotted space for partition tables, boot sectors, file alocation tables etc... and Windows doesn&#39;t calcuate the space the same way you think.

I&#39;m sure that you never had the full 120GB showing in Windows.

Disk manufacturers call 1kB (kilo byte) 1000 bytes, while all programmers know that 1kB = 1024 bytes (2^10 bytes).

1MB = 1kB * 1kB (1,000,000 bytes, or 1,048,576 bytes)
1GB = 1kB * 1kB * 1kB (1,000,000,000 bytes, or 1,073,741,824 bytes)

So your 120GB = 120,000,000,000 is 120,000,000,000 / 1,073,741,824 = 111.8GB.

now with that said... remember that your os also takes a good amount of space, etc... and if you have changed os&#39;s with formats, you will see a difference also.

My brother had a prob with a secounhand pc, He did a format and crap was still on the hd, I had to fdisk before a format, is that the correct procedure?
It worked when i did that, now running 100%

Those types of files aren&#39;t added to the capacity of the drive, they&#39;re subtracted from it which leaves you with the true operating capacity. The Size that it shows in a hardware evaluation list or system diagnostic is just a generic label for that drive any way and it&#39;s called an "advertised value".
Are you gonna be just as upset when you realize that your 128 meg video card actually only has 120 meg available because some is reserved for the system? Or when you figure out that not all of your ram is available for the same reason?

I am more than happy with my pc and Dell. Anybody could build a pc like this , matter of having the parts, Dell support is why Dell makes the money they deserve it. Memory on this pc has dropped I don&#39;t care if you belive me or not....if you don&#39;t know just fucking say so, this is not a pissing contest
