Hey, guys. I've got a few bucks now and I'm planning on investing them in a console. Which is the better buy though? PS3 or 360? The PS3 seems better on paper with hardware but the 360 comes close. The price tag on the ps3 is a bit too much. So what would you guys suggest?

The PS3 is $200 more but you get a blu-ray player, numerous card slots, and a huge software library.

PS3.

If you are looking for better online capability though go with the 360.

For now I would get the 360, buy PS3 later on if it does good (like in a year).

I'm going through the same decision here in trying to figure out what to buy myself for Christmas. After reading many hardware, game, and performance reviews; I have decided that the 360 is the best option for now. However, this is just my opinion... I'm sure all the ps3 fanboys have many reasons why you should go out and buy the ps3 instead

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I've read reviews and the 360 graphics are actually considered to be better as of now. But many people are saying this is because PS3 developers just want to "throw" their games out quick. Also, about the blu-ray player for just an extra $200, I don't really think I'll be needing blu-ray. I think normal dvds (dvd+r, -, and dual layer) will dominate the market for another 5-6 years at least. Plus, I don't have a hdtv so really no point in having a blu-ray running on analogue tv lol.

I was thinking the PS3 would have more great games.

I like my 360 a lot. XBL is great.

I also can't discount that Resistance for the PS3 is quite good either.

Seeing as how the only decent game for the ps3 is Resistance Fall of Man, the PS3's price is astronomical, and I probably couldn't get my hands on it even if I had the money, I gotta go with the 360.

Even with all the hoopla surrounding the Cell Processor, I just don't see the huge jump in graphics form the 360 to the PS3. In fact, just the opposite is true, as the 360 holds its own very nicely with games like Gears of War & Lost Planet.

For now its 360 for me until the PS3 has a more proven track record.

I'm going with 360 for Live and online fun once the price drops, which in Europe I reckon will happen around PS3 release day or Halo 3 release.
I'll probably pick up a Wii in a year or so too. Looks too much fun to pass up.
PS3 doesn't really have any pull for me yet, it does graphics better maybe but 720p vs 1080p isn't really a big issue for me. I figure that any superb game that doesn't come out on 360 (MGS4 maybe) I can go play on a friend's PS3, no point putting all that cash down myself. Wii has the fun controller and way of playing and the first party games you know will rock, and Xbox 360 has the big online community that will be lots of fun once I get at least a few friends playing. Drinking and playing squad shooters (Ghost Recon etc) with voice communications? Too good to pass up.

Honestly i would say wait the PS3 out for now give it awhile it has alot of things that they can make better and also wait till the format war has been dealt with, then decide for the ps3 because if you get the 360 now and hd-dvd wins you can always get the add on later for 360 and if blu-ray wns get ps3.

i had to return my ps3 already for many issues. overheating, not reading all my disc like movies and wait until more games have been released.

So for now i say 360.

ps3 is the most bang for the money so you might as well get it. plus it has a bluray player that retails for like a grand. and since it's newer it means better graphics but no halo and gta might release first on xbox and then a 6-12 months later on the ps3. Plus a wii isn't worth it right now cause in a few months the price is suppose to go down to 200 plus its from nitendo, the only good games they have is zelda

I am a Sony fan and own a PS3 happily. However, if you want the best option TODAY, the 360 is definitely it. I hate to admit it, but Microsoft's head start shows. The XBL service is fantastic, the dashboard feature makes the media center capabilities better, and the games as of now not only look better but play better. Aside from Resistance, PS3 doesn't have any great exclusive games. Most of the ports from 360 look better on 360 since that is what they were meant for.

Ask me the same question in a year, and the answer will be PS3. You'll have serious titles like Warhawk, Assassin's Creed (I know not exclusive), MGS4, etc.

BUT, if you are a fan of Sony series like Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid (Devil May Cry as well), and you know you can't or don't want to buy both systems, you should get the PS3 now and just wait for the games to come out. That's what I did.

And sorry, but Wii isn't what he asked about, so let's not start sippin' the Wii koolaid. IMHO, the Wii is overpriced for what it is intended to be (a new take of the current gen).

Those 2 games are the only games I see that justifys buying the PS3. Hardware wise the PS3 is very nice in that it has a Blue Ray player and built in wifi which explains the high price. Xbox 360 is gonna get most of Playstation's exclusives. Sony likes to mislead their consumers with CGI of most of all their games, although I'm not saying their games are bad, they just like to mislead. :)

As great as the Wii feels now, it's going to all come down to software. Zelda is sick shit, and Wii Sports is fun as anything out now. But, if the software publishers go the way of the Gamecube, it will get dull fast. I think the Wii will be a turning point for Nintendo (for the better), but you never really know. In a year we'll know a lot better how each of the consoles are doing. If 360 does more of the same, more power to it; if PS3 expands its game library and gets some system sellers like MGS4, then it may start gaining some market share again; and if the Wii has consistent good games, then it could be #1, who knows? But only time will tell....

I think the straps on the controller were breaking off.... Nintendo has a replacement program here (http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/wiiplay.jsp). Anyways, either console, price aside, is a purchase that very few gamers would regret.

morphguy12
12-26-2006, 11:05 PM
Yea, the straps were snapping, so they have a recall on them for those who already bought them, and the straps are twice as thick. Both Nintendo and Microsoft are doing great, and I salute both companies for their success, but as for PS3, nothing special about it.

XBOX 360

Price, performance, visual quality, game selection and online support. The XBOX 360 wins in every category

Price: XBOX 360 is cheaper

Performance: On paper, the PS3 is more powerful. In reality, it’s quite inferior to the 360. Without getting into too many details, the three general-purpose CPU’s the xbox360 has are currently FAR easier to take advantage of than the SPU’s on the PS3. I suspect a few years down the road some high budget, first party PS3 exclusive titles will come out that really take advantage of the SPU’s and do things the XBOX 360 can’t, but I don’t think the console is worth buying based on this speculation (for some it will be though, we'll have to wait and see how these games turn out).

Graphics: The XBOX 360 is a clear winner. The GPU is more powerful. It has more powerful fillrate, and far more pixel and vertex processing horsepower. Part of the reason is their choice of memory, and architecture of pixel and vertex procesing. I can’t get into details but the same vertex shader will run much slower on the PS3 than the XBOX 360. The 360 also has a clever new way rendering high definition anti aliased back buffers. To accomplish the same effect on PS3 is prohibitively expensive. For this reason I think many games will have no choice but to run in non-HD resolutions on the PS3 version, use a lower quality anti aliasing technique, or do back buffer upscaling. The end result in all cases is going to be noticeably worse image quality.

Game Selection: The XBOX 360 has a huge head start here. 1 year is an eternity in gaming. Almost all multi-platform developers have made the XBOX 360 their primary platform due to timing of release-to-market, this means the games will look and perform better on the 360. The PS3 versions will be ports of the 360 versions. (The opposite was true for XBOX 1 vs. PS2). The XBOX 360 is also far faster to develop for due to better development tools (massively popular Visual Studio .NET vs. proprietary, buggy PS3 compiler and debugger), better documentation, and easier architecture (3 general purpose CPU’s vs. 8 specialized processors that require DMA). Timing has also caused all next-gen middleware developers to make XBOX 360 their primary platform, and they will ‘add ps3 support’ as needed. This support will probably be inferior to the XBOX 360’s due to manpower and more importantly, demand. It’s this catch-22 now that will continue to drive the 360 forward and hold PS3 back.

The other obvious point here is that right now the Xbox360 already has a very impressive line-up of titles on store shelves; the ps3 just launched, and has virtually nothing of interest. Also, many 360 games are already discounted. PS3 games are all full price since it just launched.

HD Content: The PS3 comes with one built in (blu-ray). The XBOX 360 offers HD-DVD as an add-on. You probably don’t care about HD-DVD right now. But you will soon (The quality between DVD and HD is comparable to VHS vs DVD, if you have the right TV) so I suggest paying attention to the war that’s begun. There are two formats: HD-DVD and BLU-RAY. Basically if you rent a BLU-RAY DVD from Bockbuster, it won’t play in your XBOX 360 HD-DVD, and vice versa with the PS3. The implications of this format war would require another article on its own. But as far as the consoles are concerned, the XBOX 360 wins because the DVD player is a separate unit. Playing movies is very taxing on the DVD reader, and let’s face it. In 3 years when your PS3 DVD drive goes out due to playing lots of movies (PS2 was notoriously bad about this) you will have to go buy another PS3. With the 360, you’ll just chuck your HD-DVD player, and go buy another one at the store. Another point for the XBOX 360, is that I don’t know who will win the format-war, so I would rather wait with purchase of a HD player. The PS3 doesn’t give you this option.

PS3 controversy: Shootings, Wallmart fights, Ebay sales etc. Ignore it. It will pass soon.

The main problem with PS3 is that there won't be any way to make or play "backups" of PS3 games in the near future (1-2 years). Therefore I would rather wait 1-2 years and observe new developments in that area before buying PS3.
Overall PS3 is more technically advanced and will probably be the best choice in future, but not in 2007.

grchl3
01-01-2007, 06:49 AM
It'll be so much easier to answer this question when the 2nd gen games make their roll out for the ps3. Although most of the games out now for the ps3 are lackluster with the obvious exception being Resistance Fall of Man, you can't really fault 1st gen games that are released for any console cause they're always less than stellar. The xbox 360 has already proven itself with its 2nd gen games, Gears of War being a shining example of this. So I guess its a waiting game now to see what the ps3 brings to the table.
