They are both quality.

If you need a 320 GB drive then OK, but if you just need some extra space, go for the Seagate/WD 10,000 RPM drive. I think they make them up to 150GB, but WELL WORTH IT!!!!

ummm... am looking for at least 300GB.. 150 aint enough.. but you're saying WD 7200RPM 320GB is fine? :)

Personally I prefer Seagate because they have a better warranty and are generally quieter.

Yep. Either way you go, you'll be fine. I've always stuck with WD because they have always treated me right, but I also have a Seagate 200GB as well right now. No complaints.

I think they are both quality. It all comes down to preference - Chevy vs Ford type thing.

I highly recommend the 320GB Seagate. Their perpendicular recording technology is just superb and they are way quieter.

Everything that's not Maxtor is fine.

I personally always preffer WD as I have been through 23 HDD's the last 6 years and none of them has ever failed.

I have had 10 Seagate disk too and 3 of the died, but that might just be bad luck as I have a friend that has 40 Seagate disks (yeah he got too much money) and no problems.

I wouldnt go with WD pieces of crap. Ive have a 160gb Samsung drive and it has last me for 5 years and its still going. Got a 3 year old WD drive and the POS didnt work and was very noisy. So I got another 250gb Samsung and its running excellent.
When I got the new Samsung the computer tech said that Samsung will no longer be selling to Canada and that they will be replacing them with Seagates which are comparible in quality.

If I may add...... STAY AWAY from Maxtor harddrives. They are very, very evil things.

Maxtor is the spawn of satan :dabs:

You might wanna have a look at Samsung's Spinpoints as well, tralala. They are all right as far as the performance goes, quiet, and usually cheap-ish.

I second that... I personally would go with WD HD myself. The only problem I've had with them, was it not fitting properly into my PS2 to connect to the network adapter  ... but in terms of PC use, their top notch.

Well, I've been using Maxtor drives for about 8 years now and had my first failure last year. They replaced it without quibble.
Maxtor are now owned by Seagate.

Oddly enough, I've seen two (and heard of another) Western Digital drives that have gone faulty - a loud click and then inaccessible through DOS or Windows.

My latest is Samsung SATA. I bought it cos everyone seems to be selling them at the local fairs st very reasonable prices. Apart from the very quiet motor whir it's silent even when reading/writing. I'm impressed.

The point of all this?
They're all about as reliable as each other so you can really base your choice on performance & price.

well the main reason i asked was because the PC place i usually go to deals with WD, and was just trying to figure out whether or not it's worth while going forward with it :)

thanks for all the replies guys :)

Depends.
Is this a second/storage drive or will it be the primary OS drive?

tralalala
12-21-2006, 07:12 PM
secondary.. the slave drive.

clocker

Then it's easy.

I'll assume you're using XP...
Right click on My Computer and choose "Manage".
In the new window, look on the left hand pane and click "Disk Management".

Your new drive will show up as "unallocated space".
Right click on the new drive and choose to "create new partition" and you're off to the races.

I got a 250GB external SG for $60 AR and a 400GB external WD for $100 AR ($40).

I have a $200 internal WD in my Xbox and I think I paid $50 AR for that at the time.

Maxtor are now owned by Seagate.

I had an external maxtor break down for me earlier this year, and a couple of older internal ones kept losing sectors or something, a couple of years back.

Might just be very bad luck, tho' :dabs:

Edit: actually, very bad luck would probably mean explosions of some sort and me losing an eye or something, so scratch that.

EDitII: The noise level on current Samsungs, at least the spinpoints I've tried, is excellent. When I put mine in I thought they weren't working at first, as my fans are loud enough to mask what little sound there is.

I agree that the Spinpoints are very quiet but they also seem to have a very high failure rate.
One of our customers has lost three out of four Samsungs since this last summer.

Not disabled in BIOS?

Checked the jumpers?

This isn't a stone age computer that can't handle big drives?

tralalala

checked the BIOS, it ain't there...

it doesnt have jumpers - its SATA.. no slave/master on it.

its a PC from last year.. works perfect.. just no idea why this is suddenly not recognizing that a new HDD has been inserted.

Swapped cable with the old drive?

Does the drive spin when powering on comp?

Is the SATA controller enabled in the BIOS?

Does the drive show up in the Device Manager?

nope doesnt show up in the device manager.

the other drive is also SATA.
didnt swap cables with old drive...
it does work, cos the guy at the shop tried the HDD on one of the PC's there and it was recognized..
i have no idea what could possibly be causing the problem.

i have an IDE.. no sense at all why it wouldnt work.

the guy at the shop put his wondows on the other HDD, and it worked (showed both the one it was installed on and the other).. meaning it must be something with my windows.

i think i'll reformat the whole PC.. do you think it'll work?

Virtualbody1234
12-27-2006, 05:09 PM
Don't reformat!

it doesnt have jumpers - its SATA.. no slave/master on it.

i have an IDE..These 2 posts don't match!

It's either IDE or SATA. It can't be both.

Check the jumpers.

No wonder we have problems helping you. :frusty:

look, ive chatted on some support IRC channel, and i can tell you that both are SATA, they both show up on the BIOS screen, and I have changed booting order, and got into the windows the guy at the shop installed, and on that one, both show up on device manager.

both are connected to the mobo...

so, it seems something is screwy with my windows..

if i reformat - can i delete just the partition windows was installed on, then merge that partition with the other 3 i divided the orginal in to, without losing any data, and install XP on the new HDD?

Installing a SATA drive is not easy if you already have a machine set up with an IDE drive. Cos your bios will not recognise it

I had to re-install windows - get to the repair console step and then insert my floppy disk with the Sata/Raid drivers on it.

Its quite a scary process.

It would be best to backup all your files and do a clean install of XP.

By the way SATA drives are much faster than IDE.

And the cable are nice and thin too.

DigbySATA is a complete pain in the ass but once you get it working, it's a cinch to work with. My problem wasn't my SATA hard drives, it was my Plextor Burner. I never did get it to work properly so I gave up and went with IDE for that drive. It also greatly depends on your motherboard as to how easily Windows will see things.

We all seem to be saying we prefer one brand or another as if we buy a hard drive each week ! The way file sizes are going up !

Well I seem to be buying one a year at least as I have 2 computers (soon to be three) with 2 drives in each. I am obsessed with doing backups.

Soon it will be like going to McDonalds - would you like a hard drive with that ?

Some of us do.
In fact, I'd estimate that I replace ten drives a week on average.
The shop stocks Seagate exclusively and except for a dalliance with WD Raptors, Seagates are all I've ever used in Sprocket.
She is currently sporting two 250's in RAID0, a 500GB for storage plus the external Vantec containing another 250.
All drives are SATA2, perpendicular recording w/ 8MB cache and I couldn't be happier.

Obviously, this is still not enough drives to form a statistically valid sample but my high regard for Seagate is based on more than just one or two personally owned units. VB and Lynx have more experience than the average bear as well- I'm pretty sure VB runs Seagates, not sure about the big cat.
