LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Nintendo Co. Ltd. sold 476,000 units of its new Wii video game console in the United States in November, more than twice the number of PlayStation 3s sold by rival Sony Corp., as the two consoles debuted mid-month, research group NPD said Friday.

Sony's PS3 sales came in at 197,000.

Microsoft Corp. sold 511,000 units of its Xbox 360 in November, according to NPD.

That console, released just over a year ago, is locked in a three-way battle with the PlayStation 3 and Wii, which were released in mid-November amid speculation over whether Sony can maintain its dominance over the global console market after selling more than 106 million PlayStation 2 units globally.

The Japanese electronics maker had said it would ship 400,000 PS3s into the United States for its launch, but there has been broad industry speculation that the company had fallen far short of its initial goal.

Nintendo has said it expects to ship 4 million Wiis worldwide by December 31, double the number of PS3s promised by Sony. Late last month, Nintendo said it sold 600,000 Wiis in the first eight days after its November 19 debut.

Microsoft, which gets most of its sales from North America, is targeting global Xbox 360 shipments of 10 million by year end.

Nintendo's Wii retails for $250; Sony's top-line PS3 retails $600; and Microsoft's Xbox 360 retails for $400.

NPD is still calculating historical console sales data.

NPD said overall video game-related sales were $1.7 billion in November.

Sales of games that run on consoles and portable players were $804 million. Hardware sales were $771 million, fueled by consoles and Nintendo's DS hand-held device, which sold 918,000 units in November.

NPD receives data representing approximately two-thirds of the U.S. retail sales and makes projections for the remainder of the market based on a sampling of U.S. consumers.

No secret there. Everyone knew this would happen strictly due to the limited number of PS3's shipped to stores.

PS3 will sell more in the long run, imo.

That's actually a good point. When talking about numbers people tend to forget that the PS3's release has been in extremely limited quantities. The sales numbers will no doubt rise in 2007 as supply increases.

Nice graphic of the Nintendo console sales. Its staggering to see by how much the releases since the original NES have sunk. The wii should do better than the Gamecube & N64 though it seems doubtful that it can gain more market share than that from Sony & MS.

That chart also shows that more expensive units sell less.

No it doesn't at all and that's a very narrow view.

I think this is due to the price of the Wii compared to the PS3, and the availability versus the PS3.

No. The chart shows sales rounded to the nearest ten thousand. Also I think the GC is the only system still for sale new.

idk if this is relevant to this thread or not, but nintendo makes a profit for every wii it sells. sony loses money on EVERY ps3 system it sells. so, no matter nintendo will be ahead.

I agree, mostly. However, Sony hopes to make it's money on games. Eventually as manufacturing costs go down, they make money on the console too. Also, there is more incentive for Sony since the PS3 is a Trojan Horse for new media format supremacy.

Imagine if Blu-Ray wins out and is the movie (and even PC) standard around PS4 time.

I can't see the public going for another better movie standard than the winner (between HD-DVD or Blu-Ray) in only 7 more years. I mean the generation of HD players pretty much matches up against the HDTV standard (except technically the discs can look better than the broadcasts...for now).

Nintendo would still problably remain last gen. The Super Nintendo was great but since then they have been a disappointment.

Interesting, looks like Nintendo has another success on their hands. Smart move making their machine cheaper and ensuring they have loads to sell on release date.

I might pick up a Wii in the new year so you can add another one to the Wii sales column.

i'll get a wii just for the fact it plays all my ngc games. sad thing is i still won't get rid of the ngc for the simple reason that it plays my gba games on the tv. c'mon wii! make me an adaptor. i'm also waiting for the "regular" controller to cum available.
