Since utorrent doesn't have an auto update function, you should'nt have to worry about it. If it comes out with some new shady functions then just stick to the older ones and don't upgrade. If a client were to be released with spyware or something to help the authorities track you down, it would be all over the net in a flash. That kind of tactic would only be good for a few days and would never work again.

was using bittorrent until i found utorrent. have really enjoyed it and have noticed quicker downloads. i am going to try azureus as well, but my filesharing machine is a dinosaur POS. filesharing is all it is good for and if azureus is as big of a resource hog as i hear from lots of people it may kill it.

utorrent is the best client ...it works with all trackers...

kabloomz
01-21-2007, 03:05 AM
well...

considering it was bought out by the BT creator... who now collaborates with the mpaa... this will suck majorly because utorrent could have some hidden features for mpaa agents, they mite incorporate DRM's, etc.... maybe be good for the new features they are talking about.. but for filesharing this would be bad...

then again the BT protocol could be updated to suit the needs of the mpaa... even worse.. :dabs:

That's why you don't update, kalboomz. Stick to 1.6.

well didn't plan to... but the protocol could still be updated... i am sure the original developer knows this dilema... and i am sure he is racking his brain to figure out a way to work this out...

the irony

utorrent is clearly the best overall client imo. I have used Bitcomet, BitTorrent and Azureus. All seemed to be slower and Bitcomet and Azureus noticeably slowed down my system. It is unfortunate it was bought out, however I'm sure if there is a problem, programmers will jump on it and produce something better.

We all hope so. Check out this interview with Bram Cohen.
http://torrentfreak.com/interview-with-bram-cohen-the-inventor-of-bittorrent/

Quotes

TorrentFreak: What was the main reason behind the acquisition of uTorrent?
Bram Cohen: uTorrent has both an impressively clean codebase and large user community, although we were already working on our own C++ implementation. Moving forward, you’ll see announcements related to BitTorrent being embedded on silicon and on non-PC hardware thanks to the new C codebase we have (based on uTorrent and our protocol extensions)."

TorrentFreak: Are their plans to remove any of the present features uTorrent has?
Bram Cohen: No, uTorrent users are quite happy with it, and we wish to keep things that way. In fact, be on the lookout for a Mac and Unix port, which we have the resources to do thanks to the size of our engineering team.

TorrentFreak: Will the uTorrent client be integrated into the BitTorrent Video Store?
Bram Cohen: We’re going to launch our entertainment network with support for whichever BitTorrent client the user wishes to install.

So, hopefully he won't go out an commercialize it.

They used to have issues with earlier versions, but utorrent is quite great, espeacially with the remote administration tool..

Adding torrents from work/friends is quite good. Allthough i use RDP mostly, its sometimes easier to just throw one file up via utorrent web interface.

Scheduler is the shit, i just hope they don't bloat the software too much.

i used Azureus in the past, and only changed to Utorrent recently. if Utorrent was ever banned i would have no problem going back to. as long as you spend a little time configuring settings on Azureus you should have no problems with it. the only reason i changed from it, is because it is a bit of a resource hog.

I think I do remember reading some things a few months ago, people were getting paranoid about the future of utorrent. I guess the potential of it being corrupted and used for more than managing p2p. The whole "selling out to the man" perception. And also protection of user privacy issues, spyware, etc...

those of you that have tried the others (particularly azureus), what MAKES Utorrent better in YOUR opinion?

viralend
02-26-2007, 03:08 AM
@dahg
Probably the fact that azureus might not be trustworthy. Their client was found to send your ISP name, download, and upload data to "ae2.aelitis.com". At first they made excuses about it. Then they admitted to it, and said it would be removed from future versions except 3.x.x.x.. Also, their new content partner Zudeo is bad news. Also utorrent takes less memory than azureus. :D

Please read this thread (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/bittorrent/t-file-sharing-library-wifi-161477) where I posted my problem.

And please help me if you can.

I can't see why utorrent would be banned from public/private trackers unless it was doing something to mess up the torrent protocol(s). V1.6 is working fine for me with no hassles whatsoever. I've heard of other programs out there that actually cheat the other clients in a torrent and only pull down data and never share.

utorrent 1.6 is meant to have an exploit that allows hackers to manipulate torrent files causing a buffer overflow at the targets computer which would make it possible to execute code on it allowing them to put a virus onto the computer memory. utorrent 1.61 has fixed that problem.
