Hey there. I rarely take notice of my router, and have just noticed something.

My router has its own ip address which i have assigned. But when i go to whatismyip.com my public ISP address shows. Is this correct or should the site have shown my router's address instead??

As you can see, i dont know much but help appreciated:)

Your IP shown at whatismyip.com is WAN (wide area network).
Your assigned IP in your router is LAN (local area network).
You also have yet another IP in each PC connected to the router (also LAN).

so is it correct that with a router, my wan ip address whould be showing? i thought routers were about hiding my real address or securing myself [apart from sharing bandwidth with more than one pc]

Yes that's correct.

And it is more secure because the IP of your PC is hidden (LAN).

oh right! i didnt know that my pc had its own ip. it all makes sense now. Before, i had the impression that something was hidden due to router but because my isp [wan] addy was showing, i thought my router was messed up! Dint know the router hides a different ip.

thanks virtualbody1234 for the explanation :) a bit relieved now.

Your IP shown at whatismyip.com is for wide area network
