Has anyone ever had any problems with this brand of external hard drive?

Best Buy currently has Western Digital (My Book) external hard drives on sale.

The 500GB is only $200, and it's a tempting deal, but I don't want the case to get too hot or a drive temperamental to errors. Any reviews would be helpful. Thanks. :)

Is this the same model?

There are a few user reviews there.

Also note the better price. $184.99

best buy is a ripoff compared to newegg, though they did have a 250GB WD My Book for only $69 on Black Friday. I wish I got one then b/c I haven't even seen a closer price on that HD.

I've read that the WD externals are devilishly difficult to open should the drive ever fail and need to be replaced.
Furthermore, WD still uses the legacy Molex power connector so even if you successfully pry the casing apart, the only suitable replacement drive is another WD (seems the included drive is actually SATA).

For a little extra money I'd go with an external enclosure and the drive of your choice rather than a pre-packaged unit.

Also, be aware that the MyBook comes formatted FAT32- you'll want to change that before using it.

that's why I stick with internal drive or an external case and HD. I like to have control over my stuff.

Edit: Internal Drive

Why? I'm not familiar with the format. Is it bad?

FAT 32 is the file system used by Win98/ME.
It has issues with large files transferred from a NTFS PC.
If your PC is Win XP (either flavor) it is almost certainly formatted NTFS (unless it was an Upgrade from an earlier OS).

A bit of overkill for a backup storage solution, don't you think?

I guess he's thinking of "fast" backup storage so the data can just sit there in a hurry. :dabs:
