Never reformatted on my new computer (~1 year)... I *believe* my HD's are fine, its not like I use kazaa which will infect my computer instantly:lol: BT=safe, clean, fast:)

I have 2-400 gig HD's and 1 500gig MyBook and I haven't defreged in about 2 years now and all is well. A little fragmentation is good for the soul I say ;)

I do mine about every 2 weeks or so... Used to do it every week before I got 2 drives installed. I use my secondary HD for all my BT and Newsgroup stuff, so my main drive should not have to be done as often.

I defrag about once a month. Also formated my windows hdd awhile back with a a larger cluster size to keep if from getting fragmented so much when downloading large video files.

Everyday? Dude!

As for me, I usually do it as part of a general maintenance routine every other month. I run Spybot, have Norton do a full system scan & then defragment.

I've got Diskeeper set to automatic, so it defrags everyday.

NOD32 does a scan everyday.

I run a registry cleaner and registry compactor every week, or sooner if I'm uninstalling software.

I reformat and reinstall windows every year.

well I am close to lysine

perfectdisk to defrag every other day HDDs and page file on every boot

kaspersky to scan my PC weekly and critical areas & startup objects daily

tuneup utilities weekly (reg cleaner)

reinstall windows every 6 months (on average)

i defrag everyday. i use o&o defrag which is scheduled at 4am every morning while i sleep.

Pc runs too fast, and smooth. Files play much better, and quicker.

Used to do it often.
Now, maybe once every 3 months or whenever I notice performance degradation - nothing too tech - just general system responsiveness.

ive only got 2 80gb partitions for operating system files and they get defragged every month, stuff from bittorrent goes on the media partitions so theres no need to defrag them ever since even having them heavily fragmented wouldnt affect the os performance

I think the best set up is to download to a designated hd
and keep libraries in another
then once a month defrag is cool

I haven't defragged my windows partition since i resized it about 9 months ago. My linux partition hasnt been defragged ever since it doesnt need to be.

I have never noticed a difference between a heavily fragmented drive and a unfragmented drive so why bother with it.

I probable defrag once every 2-3 months!!

since I leave my PC on almost 24/7, i have perfectdisk defrag all drives at 2am every saturday morning
that way when kaspersky does its scan at 4am the next day it breezes through ready for when i get up

I used to defrag twice a night.

However now that the new version of Diskeeper is out, my computer constantly runs Diskeeper in the background to catch fragments as they happen. So I guess there really isn't a time at which I'm not defragging.

I haven't defragmented mine in like 2 years.
Defrag, then run Tuneup Utilities Registry cleaner, and I guarantee you see a huge speed gain in that poor neglected computer.
(Unless you have a real low amount of RAM, 512 or less.)

Used to be every day but as my poor old machine spends most of it's time encoding at the moment i have to fit in the defrags around that.

i don't remember when but i am sure it's not as often as it should be.
a scheduled defrag is ok when ur pc runs 24/7. it will sure save you crying when logical errors mess up ur hdd.

Just for those who are (or will be using) Vista, Diskeeper has announced a version, and Perfect Disk already has one out.

every 2 weeks. I also used diskeeper's function that allows me to increase the MFT allocation size. Things are going GREAT!

Is it true, i've heard that fragging is hard on the harddrive?

I used to defrag more often. But now days my hard drives are all very close to 100% all the time. So there are no room to move files around. But when I have burned out all that I need to burn and deleted the rest...

Yes, defragmenting a hard drive puts strain on the heads by thrashing them about a lot.
Consider though, that if you don't defrag, the drive heads will need to thrash about to a lesser extent almost constantly during normal use so although it's under less strain than when defragmenting they will be thrashing about far more overall.
Now consider that once a drive has been defragmented it will not constantly thrash about during normal use... and the next defrag pass will not thrash the heads about anywhere near as much as it did the first time because there's less defragmenting to do.

Bottom line: first defrag pass takes a long time and sounds very unhealthy but after that the drive operates more efficiently and subsequent defrag passes are quicker and quieter.

note: This only applies to the Windows OS. Linux has a much better file writing strategy and suffers from negligible fragmentation. I have no idea what Macs do, apart from keeping you dry in the wet.

I have o&o installed which defrag harddisk automatically when needed. So i cant tell you exactly how often i defrag my harddisk. Assume that sometimes this program runs in background from twice a day if i delete or move large files (it depends on my daily work) to once a week or a bit longer.

Maybe once every 2 months. Defragging is something that I just forget to do :(

erRor67
02-06-2007, 10:11 PM
I dont even bother defragging my harddrive. I just reinstall windows every two months or so. Its not an inconvience for me cause is use a program called nLite that allows me to create a custom Windows XP installer cd. So i just pop it in and it install everything including patches, settings and programs without user intervention.

Why do I do this? I just like working with a clean and new OS. Lol, this of course isnt for everyone.

That said, its about time i reformat. Ive been putting it off for like 2 weeks.

Normaly delete movies, games, ect. if i dont like them.
If i do like them i burn the files to dvd-disks and name them so i always can find what i'm looking for.

Defreg when i think my computer is slowing down or not working as i want it to :D
