Our ranks (those who care to DEBATE, DISCUSS, and SOLVE) are growing nicely-while we may never take over the reins, perhaps we could invite the power-mongers in for a look-see-maybe they would/could learn something.

Seriously-

It's cooking pretty good here these days-perhaps we should think about petitioning the mods to re-name this section to reflect the need to discuss politics/international affairs, etc., on an ongoing basis; the current heading seems a bit out-moded by now.

Any thoughts?

Good call, a "Current Affairs" section would be better than having the "War in Iraq" title. The Lounge doesn't seem the right place to discuss the more serious aspects of life. We got a Bookworld so there is hope!! :D

Why not just call it "Ongoing Discussion"?

J2K4 the idea is brilliant,

I can remember a contemptuous but prescient newbie posting something like this on April 19th.

<!--QuoteBegin--hobbes@19 April 2003 - 20:17
" Seems that this forum has sort of selected out the more serious type of poster and there has been a rather inspiring exchange of ideas and view points. Trust me, I come from the Anarchy Online forum (just an online game) and this is so much more enjoyable. I don't have to re-invent the wheel everyday.

Shame we can't somehow preserve this more mature area so we are not thrown back in the "Whose got the cutest butt" social forum.

Hey, I'm all for taking about "boobies" and such, but it seems that more serious discussions are immisible with this silly (but healthy) banter.

What I'm saying is that I don't want to be thrown back into the kiddie pool. Give us an adult section [/quote]

I'm sure he has moved on, but his message remains.

I would only add that I would like the forum to be broader than just politics. I am more of a concepts/ ideas man. To be honest, I find political discussions to be about as interesting as watching a dog chase it's tail and equally as productive.

I think the name should be reflective of gentleman sitting in a large book lined study, stone drunk on brandy and contemplating their glass. Smoking jackets and a pipe, required.

The Drawing Room, The Parlour, The Lounge, The Inner Chamber or The Gentleman's Club.

I know the last will draw pc ire, but look at the posts in this forum, can you find any women? I don't think they enjoy these sometimes testy exchanges. We will of course allow guest passes for ladies such as Sara who don't mind exchanging punches every now and then.

I actually use bookworld for this function now, but I still find the title restrictive.

Hmmmmmm.....
I kinda thought that noob had it goin' on-didn't feel he was contemptuous, just possessed of a forceful conviction.

Anyway, if such was the case (as I'm well aware it was), I'll settle for a second on his original 'motion'. :P

Might I also add: Your idea of a "Drawing Room" is, dare I say it, PERFECT?
Would seem to summon the desired imagery.

And, as I myself can claim enlightenment as to the benefit of the distaff view, I would welcome, indeed encourage, their participation. ;)

I propose we informally vote, or offer other suggestions, as to a name for this section, so that we might present a finished idea to the powers that be. B)

P.S.

The lounge is a place where hardly anything of substance is discussed.
I think that this place should'nt be associated with it at all.
I've made a request to a couple of admins who were responding to another post of mine and I'm waiting to hear what they say.

Perhaps....

Make the posts count negatively. For every post in the New World you subtract from your count. That would eliminate those who are only interested in inflating their count and ultimately lead to a new standard of cool. Big post counts would become beourgouis and declasse. The truely hip would have negative numbers.

And of course, you would have to wear black...

MagicNakor

That would have the opposite effect, sadly. Once people started seeing the negative numbers as the "new cool," they'd start spamming in here to fit in. The Lounge II, if you will.

A little 'thankyou' to Hobbes for his anti-mysoginistic stance on the proposed new 'room', although I bristle at being 'allowed' a special pass, much like the 'honorary' member title for ladies within many a golf club.

Clearly, there are less women on the board than men meaning that as a percentage of participation, I and my other occasional female contributors may actually be providing input at the same frequency as the men.

I am unsure of the figures, but there are approximately 10 regular contributors to the banter.

If I am the most regular female (no proof here though) and represent roughly 10% of the posters here, and the total board membership consists of approximately 10% women (again no evidence) then the ratio is about even.

This means that there is no need for a 'guest' membership for me.

Might I suggest 'Semantic Banters' as a name?

i totally agree with changing the name of these threads
when i started i think marines were already eating army surplus hot-dogs in Baghdad
so the war isn't very useful as a title, i had been thinking that
'international politics' might be appropriate, [although 'anitnational politics' would fit me better] now i'm thinking
'The United Notions'
it would have been nice to get post count for participating here but i think that the post count works well as it is because the forum is about kazaa and therefore only kazaa/P2P threads should count [but on that note what about the guest section and a lot of why/help threads which should have been answered by reading FAQs]
and since my topic 'isn't filesharing a solcialist activity?' was savaged after it's move to the lounge i have deep reluctance to try to discuss anything mildly serious there ever again
i don't like the 'physical' name suggestions like the drawing room etc. as there is nothing physical here, also any suggestion of exclusivity should be avoided i feel, as the more views expressed the richer the idealogical compost we make here
i really hope that this will keep going, as it is one of the most entertaining and frank opportunities for us to speak our minds on topics which are rarely explored so personally these days
[i have had to turn off the option for people to send me email through the board 'cause all anyone used it for was to send me hate mail - that being the only downside i've experienced, we should keep it going and build]

As has been said above a current affairs forum would be great but surely a far wider variety of issues, concepts and ideas can be discussed. Although there is plenty of information available for current affairs and they present interesting topics for discussion, I've quietly watched many topics degenerate into flame wars (and I've stayed out of them for that reason). Perhaps a wider range of discussion which people might be less prone to flaming with might be better as well as current affairs?

clocker
05-30-2003, 12:50 PM
A topic so bland as to not present at least the possibility of flaming wouldn't be worth the space in this section.
I think the tone in here has evened out of late and the stage is set for some productive debate.
A lively debate that doesn't occasionally degenerate into sheer hysteria would be boring.

Watch the British Parliament for my idea of a suitable role model.
They are so amusing and ,after all, my primary reason for being here is amusement. Any side benefits, such as education, cultural expansion, etc. are simply perks.
Unlike the Mods, I don't get a fabulous salary and the chance to be bribed ( yes, I know you will see that, Bender) just to be here.

Just so.......

Nursey School (Kindergarten?) would be a better role model.

I find it much more rewarding watching the children, than a bunch of incontinent, immoral, greedy, power hungry and senile people arguing.

Actually, thinking about it......maybe they just never left the Nursery...

Oh, you were talking about the House of Lords?

I was talking about the House of Commons.....

House of Commons 'runs' the country..

House of Lords owns the country.... ;)

I didn't say it had to be impossible to flame in it. After all, people like to let off a little steam every now and then and I like a lively debate as much as the next person so long as people don't get too carried away (starting on personal insults etc.)...Just thought a wider range of topics might be considered.

As for the British parliament, i've got to admit they are amusing...though I must say they should stop treating it as a game to score points against each other. Makes me wish they were'nt the parliament running my country. Thank god our royalty have no real power though...then we really would be in trouble. (though thinking about it you could say we already are...anyway enough of my cynicism and pessimism) B)

I've always wondered how many of those "Knights of the Realm" are also "Knights of the Green Shield" ... or are otherwise heavily invested in British Petroleum.

By all means, feel free to expand our topical horizon in any direction you see fit.
Politics can get rather rigid and dry in a hurry.

personally, I'm a big fan of cynicism and pessimism ( which is why, all evidence to the contrary, I was a fan of JPaul's. He just caved and ran too quickly for my taste, but there you go. If you're ghosting about JP, why not come back?) so don't put them away- polish and cultivate 'em. ;)

A Knight of the Realm hasnt enough rank to make it into the House of Lords (at least not that title on its own)

I THINK (Im not big on this) that BP was originally owned by the small investor, which means its probably now wholley owned by Private Pension Funds and other large corporations.

Not my favourite company, as they hired certain people to beat up and kill protestors in a third world country where they were operating and had a lot of political muscle (see, its not just US companies that are bastards ;) )
