load up your movie in Virtual Dub,choose in video tab
"Full process mode-->Compression-->XviD

The best one I have come across in my years is called DVD2SVCD (http://dvd2svcd.doom9.net/). It is free and can also be configured to make DVD2AVI or DVD2DVD.

Point 1. With DVD2SVCD (http://dvd2svcd.doom9.net/) it does take along time to make these, however the quality is unquestionably briliant.

Point 2. DVD2AVI there are better programs out there namely Easydivx (http://easydivx.does.it/) which is also free.

Point 3. Unless you have a DVD wrighter like me this option is not for you.

Softwaretools take up enormous resources and time.
If you plan on making a lot of svcd's you might consider buying
a videocard with builtin mpeg2-encoder.
So it depends on your hardwarespecs.
