Sorry if i'm in the wrong forum but can someomne tell me how i can get rid of an icon?
The problem is that back along i downloaded a antivirus called trend micro,it worked fine but i decided to take it out.I manage to uninstall the programe but it has left it's icon in the place of my external hdd icon, it is also in add and remove but every time i try to uninstall it i get a message saying error and it will not allow me to remove it.

So at the moment i've got avg free but i want to install kaspersky anti-virus but kaspersky wont allow me to install it's programe as it clashes with trend micro and ask me to uninstall that first before installing kaspersky.
Hope you can help
Thanks.

Yep.

Download that.
Open the process called Gipo@MoveOnBoot
Drag the icon in question into the 'Browse' space.
Choose delete.

I'm not looking at it right now, but if I remember, that's the order.

After a reboot, the icon will be gone.

Skizo, when i move the icon into the browser it says that this folder is not empty do i wish to continue do i apply yes, only the icon in question is my external hdd, that is the one that is place with the trend micro icon.

I've got about 50gb of programs in that folder. If i say yes would it just get rid of the icon or all the contents that is in that folder as well.

Unplug it first , it is external right ? :ermm: Unpluging and reinstalling should reset the icon as well but you should be able to go into Device Manager for that .

@peat the external hardrive icon won't appear unless it is plugged in
So Tony do not do it

I don't agree at all with skizo's solution.
of simply deleting it....deleting what exactly, your harddrive?
His biggest problem is that trend micro did not uninstall correctly

1. I would check the web for trend uninstall problems /won't uninstall etc http://www.google.co.in/search?q=trend+micro+uninstall+problem&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
or check trendmicro support

2. I would Run a registry cleaner (a very simple one is ccleaner, goto tools)
if that doesn't work

3. rebuild icon cache. http://www.google.co.in/search?q=rebuild+icon+cache&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
if that doesn't work

4.Search the files for any relation to TrendMicro and then Search the registry for all associations of trend micro, and delete the correct ones. (be careful)

There is probably a folder somewhere, where the actual icon is being held... probably in a folder called "Trend Micro" or something
but as stated he can't install another antivirus until the other one is removed from the registry.
I heard mac never gives these problems...hmmm

Thanks zedxax i'll look into other folders to see if there is any other trace of trend micro.I know it is in all programes but havethe same problem when trying to delete it. Is itpossible that it could be in system 32?

But as far as i can teel it is only the icon that is causing the problem, and as i said before i was afraid that i would lose all my programes in my external hdd.

I don't agree at all with skizo's solution.

And you shouldn't. He didn't say the icon was that of a hard drive.

That's a pretty important piece of information don't you think, Tony? :ermm:

Zed, I think you're going a bit over the top trying to get rid of an icon that I assume isn't even there if the external hdd isn't plugged in.

If the external hdd is plugged in, there will be an icon for it. I don't believe that there is any way to have it simply not show.

Can you give us a screenshot of this icon, and where it is, please?

Skizo the issue is not the icon any longer, it is that he cannot install a new antivirus of his liking cause of a fkd unistall of Trend blocking it.
The TrendMicro icon on his extrnl hd will disappear as soon as he removes Trend properly..
(that's the "over the top part" :P )

Also check you processes in the task manager to see if you have any "Trend" process.
Kill them
Also check in Services if there is any reference to Trend, and disable them.
and then you can delete all.

Sorry skizo, i thought i explain in my first post.

What it is when i first brought my external hdd and plug it in it gives you an icon in my computer,so what i had was
Floppy (a)
local disk(c)
cd rw
Hd-hdu2(f) This is my external hdd. So when i first installed it i had an icon like the local disk(c) but now my HD-HDU2(external hdd icon)has been replaced by the trend micro icon(which is in the shape of a pill)I can't give you a screen shot as i'm not sure how do a screen shot of an icon.
Hope this explain thing.

@Skizo : :lol:

For a quick icon fix
REFRESH ICON CACHE
install and run this http://www.gold-software.com/RefreshEm-review13707.htm
it will Refresh your Icon Cache which is why you are getting the wrong icon.
check that it has fixed the wrong icon thingy.
If it has, uninstall this program, you will barelly if ever use it again.
If it does not fix the icon problem, please say so.

The icon problem is the least of your problems.
I am more interested in fixing your TrendM problem.
This can be done mainly through the Hijackthis
once you post the log, I can see the problem.

Download and extract and run this - it is called hijackthislog
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadge...8baee6434cfc13

it analyzes all your running processes and services.
Make a copy of the log file and post it in the pm or this thread.
With that we can see if there are any TrendMicro files hanging you up.
probably...

Did the renew icon cache work, yes or no?

about the hijackthis
ok you have some other issues too but i will focus on the trendmicro thing.

open hijackthis
just do a simple scan (no log)
mark these items
O23 - Service: Trend Micro Real-time Service (Tmntsrv) - Unknown owner - F:\PROGRA~1\Tmntsrv.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: Trend Micro Personal Firewall (TmPfw) - Unknown owner - F:\PROGRA~1\TmPfw.exe (file missing)

O23 - Service: Trend Micro Central Control Component (PcCtlCom) - Unknown owner - F:\PROGRA~1\PcCtlCom.exe (file missing)

then bottom left "fix checked"
ok
reboot
--------------------------

do you have a registry cleaner?
if so use it after doing this action.

---------

after the reboot you should be able to install the antivirus's you refered to.

i have to go now, will finish sometime tomorrow.

Executables residing in the Program Files folder (and not a dedicated filder within it) should be considered suspicious at best.
Those that reside and are executed from inside either of the user's Application Data folders even more so.

I suspect a malware infection here as well as the trend problem.
KIS 6 should spot these once installed but you may want to try Spybot, AdAware or (better) XoftSpy. I always uninstall Spyware Doctor when I come across it on clients' machines.

There are also plenty of (file missing) entries in that log that should be cleaned. Although they're not doing any harm since the referenced files aren't there, getting rid of them helps clean up the log for diagnostic purposes.

To remove (reset) a drive icon, open regedit through the 'run' command found in the startmenu and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons

Delete the drive letter that is giving the problems, reboot, then all is reset to normal. I've had a similar problem like this, but this solved it for me. Also, a ccleaner does have an option to remove Add/Remove Program keys, as previously stated.

Now that you have killed the trendmicro services with hijackthis
you should be able to delete the trend micro folders.
Look in
1.program files
2.C:\Program Files\Common Files
3.C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data
4.C:\Documents and Settings\youusername\Application Data

(inorder to be able to see the folders of commonfiles and applicationdata you need to make them visible,
open explorer > tools > folder options
click on view > mark "show hidden files" > ok)

when finished, run a registry cleaner
reboot.

Are you certain you clicked "fix checked" in hijackthis after marking the trend items?
if so then they shouldn't reappear.
try it one more time with hijckthis, reboot and run hijackthis again and see if they are still there.

If they reappear, (which i doubt)
In start menu, goto run - then type in: services.msc
scroll down to anything relating to TrendMicro, (they should have these words )
Trend Micro Real-time Service (Tmntsrv)
Trend Micro Personal Firewall (TmPfw)
Trend Micro Proxy Service (tmproxy)
Trend Micro Central Control Component (PcCtlCom)

double click them
and change
startuptype: disabled
service status : stop

reboot

then delete the files i said earlier
then registry clean
reboot

The few times I've had to remove antivirus software to install another one, i just uninstall and run a regcleaner. I haven't really had any problems with it.

http://kb.trendmicro.com/solutions/faq.asp (Zed mentions this)

have a look under uninstall there if you haven't gotten around to it, sometimes, for some AVs there's a trick to it.

I think norton or sth like that even had a piece of software you could download and use to uninstall borked norton installs.

Another tip might be for you to reinstall pc-cillin, and uninstall it again.

Sounds like something funky has happened to the registry, so regcleaning or correcting, possibly manually, is probably something that needs doing some more, seeing as how the icon isn't supposed to have owt at all to do with your external HD AFAIK.

i've tried to reinstall trend micro but every time i try to it says that the older version needs to be uninstalled first. And i've done loads of regcleaner but it will not pick trend micro up,i;ve tried hijack this, that got rid of the 4 trend micro files that was there but not the icon itself. And as i said it wont allow me to remove it from add and remove it keeps om coming up with error.

Maybe something here : With out the quotes of course . :)

Option 4: From the Run command window

1. Click Start > Run.

2. Type "msiexec /x {7698EDA5-A90F-4205-99CB-8FF6F9048ED9}" in the Open field.

3. Click OK > Yes.

Hopefully that will work for this guy (5 pages...), but since it originally began with Trend, least they came out with a quote "Damage Cleanup Engine / Template" :ermm:

I've never even heard of these people, guess I know why.

No i'll try it but my concern is that if i try to remove the icon my files will go with it. I can access all my files in my external hdd it is the icon that is the problem. If i try to install a different antivirus it wont allow me to do so due to this icon.
