LOL!

The case is a glass cabinet.

Bah dual-processor server, should of looked a little harder ;).

Little bit more than just a dual processor server, I can see a huge SAS RAID card & two PCI-X SATA cards there as well so there are at least 3 RAID arrays plus the system drives and two power supplies to run the beastie, not exactly your average home media NAS box.

Well since no-one has shown any pics for a while I thought I would share some of the upgrade on my Mediacenter PC

http://i53.tinypic.com/2hdqzar.jpg

http://i55.tinypic.com/25p7in5.jpg

Originally the PC was residing in the silver version of this case, the Silverstone LC16M but I have recently upgraded my home theater receiver and took
the opportunity to swap it out to the matching black version. One of the major reasons I like this case is the storage capacity, it can take a total of 7 3.5
drives plus card reader and the Rom drive and has optional cooling fans for the front of the 3.5 drive containers & each the two 3 bay 3.5's are removable.

On to the rest of the PC:

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA- EG41MFT-US2H
RAM is 4GB of G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1333
The PSU is a thermaltake XP550 430w

The upgrades.
I originally had a Core2Duo E6750 dual core in but it seemed to be lagging on database tasks I have put in a Core2Quad Q8200

With the increased TDP of the new(ish) CPU the existing CPU cooler was not going to be up to the task. The existing one was an Arctic Cooling Alpine 11 pro
but I wanted a tower cooler to match the cooling layout of the case and also since it is a desktop case give better air pass through, but with the height constraints most tower coolers were out. In the end I went for a Deepcool Iceedge 200T and it has been keeping the CPU remarkably cool @ 17c over extended operation.

I upgraded the Graphic Card from an NVidia GT220 to the newer GT430 in this case the Gigabyte GV-N430OC because the extra cuda cores will help and the DB application uses DXVA

The other upgrade is a LiteON BH104 BD-Rom drive

The system is running Windows 7 64bit and using XBMC as the Hometheater application

Yeah right, if you follow my link the proud owner is even in one of the photographs, and obviously isn't a teenage bittard with a known history of lying and cheating.
The pictures seemed hokie to me since the carpet in the background was two totally different types, I suspected he had simply grabbed images after doing a search. My search was evga 760 classified + coolermaster cosmos, which found the same images pretty quickly.
The complete setup is word for word identical to the specs in franksurred's signature.
If he isn't lying simply retake the same shot with a postit of his username here stuck on the case, that will end the debate, but in the meantime what a lying douchebag!

You misread, bijoy reckons the setup is 8 months old, he didn't mention a build time, so either by some truly remarkable coincidence they both have identical VERY high end gaming PC's, and they both managed to take the same shot from the same angle and focal length or option b bijoy is lying, now which do you pick ?

The 'oven' is a rackmount system with a Marantz SR5003 receiver a bluray player, HD DVD and a line conditioning unit at the bottom.

In answer to your other question no I did not search for the url I simply did an image search using the search criteria I mentioned before, et voila the same images magically appeared.

It is interesting that you are far more literate on the other forum you moderate on while here it seems that english is not your first language.
Also since you state that you live in the USA on WWA why did you make these two posts here ?

However there are many ways to skin a cat, and since something relatively simple like a pic of the PC with your username on a postit is beyond you I have joined WWA where ffraksured is a moderator and will contact him. My other HTPC.
This is setup in the main bedroom and streams from the main home theater system (see previous post).

I have always liked Silverstone's designs, particularly the home theater systems but this case the ML02 is one I personally find very elegant.
Because this is a slimline case I opted for an integrated mini-itx solution, a Zotac IONITX L-E. This is an Atom 330 based ITX board with an
NVidia ION chipset, which has an integrated NVidia 9400M GPU. The system has 4GB DDR3 1333 RAM (2x2GB) and a 250GB SATA HD.
I am planning to upgrade to SSD but at the moment the standard HD is adequate.
I use the optical audio out and the system is connected to a Logitech Z5400 multimedia speaker system, the video out is a Samsung LCD TV.
The system is running Windows 7 X64 with XBMC as the hometheater application.

It faces the side of my desk, shining at nothing. Also, looks much brighter in that pic. The real nuisance I had is the led on my USB hub that's built into my desk, and I usually lean an envelope against that one.

Artemis

The blue backlight on the HTPC is an LCD display, during operation it shows various functions similar to a standard audio/visual component (which it is designed to look like). While on standby the LCD panel becomes a digital clock.

I joined the forum, but they seem in no hurry to moderate the board, my initial posts are still awaiting an OK from staff. The WAA is a forum of christian gamers ? and they are very against filesharing and warez so if you do get in touch (which I have tried to do) it may pay to be circumspect about which forum this was posted on ?

That's actually why I put the question mark after the christian gamers bit, it struck me as a bit of an oxymoron since most of the games they play and the game servers they run are for splatterfest's, but then thats merkins for you, God, apple pie and large automatic weapons yeehaw!

Funny how even though the bible is very graphic in every aspect, Christian groups tend to be over protective of what games children play.

My apologies for the delays, our site Admin does this in his spare time so we're not always the most expedient. I've been buried in Deus Ex: Human Revolution since its release, so I haven't been real attentive either. I'll look into it; again sorry for the inconvenience and thanks to both of you for bringing this to my attention.

As far as being a Christian AND a gamer, let me try to address some of your questions. I've been an avid gamer since there was such a thing. Being 43 now, that puts me back to the first Atari and Commodore 64. I love it, always have! From X-Wing to Battlefield 3 (was fortunate to play the Alpha) I enjoy it all. As a Christian, I do filter what I play, but probably not the way you're imagining. I'm also an avid paintball fan, so most of what I play are shooters and/or fps/rpg hybrids. There are some driving and flight sim games in there too, but Battlefield is my main game of choice. I enjoy the teamwork, strategy, scope and adrenaline rush. The stereotype seems to be that if we're simulating violence it must be wrong. If this were true our Military forces and Police would also be immoral. First and foremost, I'm not shooting people, I'm playing a game. I don't even own a firearm and have no plans too. Secondly, even that is not done with a blind eye to the reason behind the violence. I have never viewed shooters as murder simulators but rather as paintball simulators. That said, I don't play games like Postal, Grand Theft Auto or Saints Row. Violence for the sake of violence just strikes me as irresponsible, but great story telling, polished team play, honoring our Military men and women and emerging graphic technologies are all qualities I'll go for in a game.

As Christian gamers the group I hang out with, World Wide Ambassadors, likes to take these past times and passions and create a family friendly place we can enjoy them. We host servers that are monitored for language, cheating and disrespect. A lot of us have kids that play with us as well. My daughters are both grown now, but they used to (and still do from time to time) fly jets with me in BF2, have a little fragfest with me in Half-Life 2 or join me for some Portal 2 CO-OP. I've been sensitive to what I buy and what they've seen over the years, but I don't believe being a Christian necessitates being a boring, detached "Church Lady" who shelters themselves and does nothing to relate to the world around them. My interest in computer and gaming is no different from my interest in cars or photography. I manage it, but I don't forbid it.

In any respect, if you've got questions or comments, by all means lets open a discussion... but in our own thread or PM. :)

Btw I hate to break it to you but our military and police are to a certain extent immoral .

Compromise always becomes a downward spiral if no restraint is applied, but then what is it you feel I'm "rationalizing?". I love Mass Effect, a game that was splattered across FOX news for including a sex scene (blown out of proportion, but still). However you only saw that content if you choose too. If you were morally opposed you never had to experience it. Deus Ex: Human Revolution allows me to kill at will, but reminds me I'm a Cop and not an Assassin. Again the choice is mine, I can play it lethally or not. So should I have never purchased these games because of their potential content, or should I simply apply the same principals to it that I strive for in real life? Even the games that are an all out battlefield are not a representation of what I'd like to do in real life. I enjoy good competition, but I'd be modified to have to go to war, or even shot somebody in self defense! Nobody dies in the games I play, avatars mimic death, but then they respawn 5 seconds later. That has more in common with paintball then actual war. I'm not trying to simulate violence, I'm trying to simulate team work or turning a good book into an interactive story. Games that are overly graphic are irresponsible and turn me off, so I don't buy them. My point is I have enjoyed playing "cops and robbers" since I was a little kid, yet I've never had a remote desire to run out and harm somebody because of it. Would I defend my family if put in a position where I had too? I'd do my best, but that's a far cry from instigating violence like rape or murder.

I agree that people, Christian and non, can rationalize whatever they want, and often do. I am certainly not saying all my gaming is healthy, but the aspects that become unhealthy have more to do with how much time I let it take away from family, or other priorities, then altering my disposition towards other people or compromising my faith. This could be said of any hobby that gets out of hand. I like to use the fire analogy; it can be used to heat your house or burn it down, depends on how you use it... more specifically how you manage it. Rape and murder are blatantly wrong, gaming is not. Some of it is garbage for sure, and it can become wrong if you let it control you, but that's why we read reviews, ESRB ratings and engage a little wisdom and maturity. Like our Military and Police, who's goals and purpose are to protect and defend, they only get out of hand when individuals choose to use them outside of those perimeters.

Actually being anything but perfect will send you to hell. :) That however is why Christ came to sacrifice a life He lived perfectly to pay the debt for our imperfect lives. Perfect justice fulfilled and perfect love fulfilled. The choice is still left up to us to accept that gift or not. If all of this is proof of anything it is that He will not supersede our freedom of choice.

Good discussion gents.

Just as long as you have your sins forgiven before you die, according to the theory. In context of christian afterlife, most people are burning in hell, and heaven has a lot of former death row inmates.

The point was Gaming >>> christianity

The three Gateway monitors have all died (http://reviews.cnet.com/lcd-monitors/gateway-xhd3000-monitor-30/4864-3174_7-32717941-1.html) and I'm gradually replacing them with Dell U3011's.

What kind of crap do Gateway produce? I paid 800$ for a supposedly top of the line Gateway monitor (don't remember the model as it went to trash since) about 5 years ago and it died after 2 years, now I can officially say that their monitors suck donkeys.

Agreed. I bought my three one at a time over the course of a year; this was back when they were first released and were getting outstanding reviews. Their previous 24" FHD2400 had also reviewed well, and the company was supposedly "under new management" so I thought I'd give them a chance. Unfortunately the XHD3000's died in mass quantities about 1.5-2 years later due to a circuit board that was cooking itself having been packed too tight. Despite my investment Gateway took the "that's too bad" approach because they had a recall nightmare on their hands and they knew it. The last panel I bought was as some of this was starting to come to light. When I went to register it on their site, the two I had previously registered had been erased. I re-registered them, but all three disappeared again the next day. I had the fore thought to get a screen capture in the event of a class action suit, but amazingly none have been filed.

So yes, never, ever, ever, eveeerrrrr buy Gateway.

Neither have enough room for a big ass heatsink, so I'm passing on all.

The CM V8 HS&F in my case barely fits. The side panel bulges a tiny bit; not noticeable unless you were looking for it, but still, not ideal. The new case is supposed to be 20% larger, but not sure which dimension that applies too.

That's certainly quite a machine, but $350 for a case and I don't get a PSU? :dabs:

Yeah the price is ridiculous. The original started at $250 and dropped to $200, which I thought was pricey enough. Not sure how they're justifying a 70% price increase for a case that's only "20% larger", but hopefully that will drop before it ships.

Personally I don't mind that there is no PSU. They'd have to include a top of the line 1200w or larger unit for a Tri-GPU setup like mine, which would either double the cost, or force me to replace it. So, in this price range of case, they are probably wiser to leave it up to the buyer. I do agree that should be reflected more in the price however. They could throw in their Aquagate R120 for what they're asking! :w00t:

The only real trick is if you are into overclocking, if you are then configuring the BIOS can be a big task to get the settings you want. If you're not a tweaker (pun intended) then it is simply a matter of selecting/deselecting options based on your hardware. Most options/devices these days are automatically detected and configured anyway.

Not as daunting as you might think. I'm no expert, but having taught myself to build my own PC's, I also had to teach myself to configure them. As Artemis mentioned, unless you plan to OC there is rarely anything in the BIOS that needs to be messed with, even for a fresh build. Even then it is typically only the "enthusiast" models that give you access to the more critical settings, such as: BUS frequencies and core voltage. All mobo's can be reset via a button or pulling the CMOS battery if things go wrong.

To further make matters user friendly, many of the newer motherboards are using UEFI, a GUI driven version of BIOS that gives you a windows-esque interface and allows you to use your mouse. Besides all this, the Internets has loads of tutorials for you to give you a leg up or pull your hinny out of the fire. :yup:

It's an Antec P183, which I believe is labeled as a mid tower. However I've seen many reviews claim that it's as big as a full tower, but I don't really have anything to compare it to.

It's relatively pain free, as others have mentioned. If you don't plan on overclocking (like me, I'm 99% sure I'd break something in the process) you really don't have to touch the BIOS at all. And if you get a motherboard with a UEFI, it's pretty easy to navigate it if you ever need to make any changes.

Even with only one 8800 GTS currently in use, it's still rating the graphics fairly well. As a side note, the only game I've played in the last year has been CoD: Black Ops and I was still able to turn the resolution and graphics all up to the maximum and still have smooth game play. :)

One question Skiz, why did you ditch the corsair CPU waterblock ?

I just didn't want to bother with it. I already had the motherboard screwed in, so I would have had to take that off to attach the back piece, then apply thermal paste and screw everything in to the fans and motherboard.

The CPU fan that came with the i5 was already equipped with thermal paste and it just had those snap in buttons, so the whole thing was attached in a matter of seconds. If I ever feel like overclocking it down the road, I may slap the H50 on there.

ps - Hey chewie. :wave:Hi Skeez. I remember when you had an 'o'.

What with the power CPUs draw nowadays, stock fans help keep the CPU VRMs cool especially if the board's fitted with 4+1 rather than 8+2 phase.
Don't know how your board is kitted out but it looks like a four-pin ATX12V connector so if you go back to the waterblock and overclock you might want to blow some air over the VRM heatsink.
Then again, it might not be needed at all since I've only really read about the pitfalls of overclocking AMD stuff.

Quick question... do nVidia cards output sound through the HDMI port? I heard they didn't and went ATI.
Their folding is heaps better than equivalent Radeons but I like to have sound through my TV if that's where the video is played.

NVidia cards since the later 200 series have 7.1 HDMI Audio (V1.3b) with bluray audio support. This is the 210,220 & 240 cards and above ( the earlier 250GTS, 260GTX, 275GTX, 285GTX & 295GTX did not). Some earlier NVidia cards had audio passthrough from the onboard SPDIF port on the motherboard. It depends if it was implemented by the manufacturer, but 9400GT, 9500GT & some 250GTS cards had this option.

The PSU is an interim one from another computer, although adequate for the job (just) in the Coolermaster CM690II case mounted at the bottom the cables are too short to be routed properly and hidden. Also I always intended to upgrade the PSU since the build will have an upgraded graphics card and more hard drives added, so I intend to install a 1000w modular PSU in the near future.

I may follow up again down the road but I'll prob have to be reminded. But I think I said before that without any floppy or optical drives, I shouldn't have a need to open it at all. Shouldn't be an issue. It also doesn't have a snap or those tension clasps to keep it closed like a lot of the doored cases; rather it had some hidden magnets enclosed somewhere that hold it closed with some very soft and quiet pulling. Quiet nice actually.

I've got the racks to mount the HDDs up top so the bottom cage can be removed also but I've been playing the heck out of Assassin's Creed 4 with the weather being all shit. I'll get to it eventually.

I never really understood the point of those "gaming" keyboards that included a bunch of extra keys (on in this case that arrow cluster off to the left). Wouldn't it be better just to... assign keys near the WASD cluster to the commands you need? Rather than having to wrestle with keyboard software, in addition to having you keyboard take up that much more space?

That being said though your setup looks pretty solid. I like how you have easy access to your consoles as well. Personally though I'd stick to PC gaming :P.

@nob0xerson: Cool. How are you liking the fans that came with the case?

I have some Fractal Designs somewhere, but ended up with Noctuas and then swapped all of them out for Scythes. I don't really remember why I skipped the FDs.

I have the same R4 case and I like the fans. Very quiet. The only ones I'm not a *ahem*...fan of... are on my H100i. I've gotten used to them now tho.

nob0xerson

The fans are very nice. They're 140mm and whisper quiet at the lowest setting. Even at highest setting they're more quiet than my PSU fan.

Thanks, dewds. Might give mine a go soon, then (assuming I can find them, and get over how pretty my scythes are). Got a new build coming up, anyway.

Rart
02-06-2014, 04:30 PM
What scythes are you using right now? Also which noctua's did you have.

Snee
02-06-2014, 05:24 PM
The scythes are gentle typhoons, 120mms, 1450 rpm.

I had several kinds of noctuas, I think at least two NF-P12, which had a weird way of dispersing air when not hooked up to a heatsink doing the push-pull thing, which in turn made them a bit noisier than I wanted (turned out to be noisy-ish even when hooked up to the heatsink), and then a few NF-S12A FLX and at least one NF-B9.

When I swapped chassis, I swapped out the P12s on my heatsink because of the noise, and went with another scythe at the top to match. As far as I can tell the scythes are quieter at the same speeds, and seem to push air at the same sound levels a bit better compared to the P12s, and even when running a bit faster. Whether they're better than the S12As at the same speeds I can't say as I didn't do much of a comparison there, but they can hit faster revs and as far as I can tell cool better that way. The scythes aren't the only fans I'm my current case though, as I've got two 180mm silverstones there, which have been pretty nice, and some somewhat slowed down ram cooling from corsair. The loudest thing in there now, running idle, is the (stock) cooler for my gtx 680.

The B9, I just had no place for, anymore.

Rart
02-06-2014, 06:00 PM
Hmmm. I think in general all those fans are pretty solid. If you're looking for silence undervolting/speedfan/fan controllers to get them to lower RPMs will probably help the most. Although if you're looking to start a new build and get the fractal fans, (theoretically) the 140 mm should push more air at equivalent noise levels. Then again, as you mentioned, the stock cooler on the 680 will probably outpace anything else in terms of noise making that a priority if you're looking for quiet.

Yea I definitely agree on the B9. No point in having a 92mm fan if your case can fit bigger sizes.

There totally is but its better in theory than in execution. That's sort of where I duped myself.

LG has some software it calls "Split Screen". Original, I know. I figured with that and being able to use the windows hotkeys to send the windows to the left or right I'd be all good. It separates the screen so it acts like two monitors. It has some real faults though. Everything "snaps" to the screens. So if you have a windows explorer window open and its in the way, normally you'd just move it a tad, but with this software if you move it, bam, its full screen. So instead of moving it out of the way, its now in the way of everything. There are other little annoyances too but difficult to explain.

Sometimes it was simple stuff. If I just wanted to look something up real quick, the browser window would open to the full screen. Its awkward to view a screen that wide so thats annoying. So now you have to either move it to the left or right every time. Again, just annoying.

The positives were big positives tho and I'll miss those. I use Alteryx constantly for work and thats absolutely amazing on an ultrawide. I use XMind quite a bit too. Again, fantastic on an ultrawide. Gaming was great although on newer game you have to turn down the graphics settings. I really enjoying playing BF3 again on max settings and dogfighting. Awesome experience. Believe it or not even old Age of Empires was really fun since you can see soooo much more landscape.

But, there were several little things that seemed to add up to a bad overall experience. The new monitors are 2K with super thin bezels and beautiful. No regrets.

Would that be like trying to split the image on a wide screen television Meg?? PIP is fine on a wide screen but spit?? looks terrible, so would that not be a comparison??

Reminds me of trying to get early-gen dual monitors to work. Now the bugs have been worked out and I enjoy using two- back then, I really hated the experience. The software will get better and the monitors less expensive. And I have a slight suspicion you'll be changing/upgrading not too far in the future. :) Current setup looks very nice, as well as practical. If placed slightly higher and positioned just right, you could convince people that was your view outside. Looks sharp even in the picture.

I occasionally flip through a movie on my 19" low end monitor and download from Usenet and that would be my biggest use, other than communicating with you:slap:..
I prefer to watch TV Movies or play games on a 60" flat screen , and right now i am either on an Xbox playing Crazy Kong or Xbox One Rory Mcilroy Pga Tour and Really Late at night i like to Play the Plastic Drums be it Guitar Hero Band or Rock Band and Blast the Shit out of the house!!!
PC games were never my thing, but my kids are into that stuff...

I don't understand the question?? remember i am stupid :P

Really the truth none..made a connection at Canada Computers for PC parts(can hook you up with that if you want, if you have one in your neighborhood you can pick it up there as well and occasionally i get a deal at NCIX as well both retail not online and the prices always beat Newegg etc...) and consoles and games i pay bubkes(but i don't take advantage with the console stuff)

:batman:

PS. Is Price Matching considered Paying Full Retail?? Well i still expect a better deal, but some PC parts the margins are not big so Edwin at Canada Computers does the best he can, without getting in trouble:D , and over the years i have spent a few bucks in his store where he is....
And i try to stay loyal and give him the best shot to beat every ones price and he usually does... I use to buy a ton of verbatim disks (dvd and dual layer for xbox 360 games), now other than games stream everything on hard drives , and i get them from there as well..
But really Idol... I just wanted a good MB with a Gigabyte Ethernet connection for downloading, that is more important to me, but by no means is it a fancy PC it does the job for me..And my kids have fancy machines, they like pc gaming more than consoles now....

Metallica , Van Halen , Ac Dc , BYOB, Greenday, are awsome on the Plastic drums LOL!!, and some songs i can play on the real drums in my living room as well:D

I'm liking the fuck out of it. I put in a preorder for it back in June or something. Took almost a full 2 months to arrive. It's a monster tho. For example, I was playing GTA V on outright "Low" settings before, and using every bit of juice the previous GTX 760 was capable of. Dropped the 1080 in let GeForce Experience set everything automatically, and it now has everything fully maxed out at 2560x1440 (2K) and only using about 30% of it's resources. The fans don't even spin unless I play a game. And utterly silent as well. Not a peep. I run some mods like NaturalVision which make everything crisp as hell and are notorious for slamming fps and creating loads of lag. The new gpu doesn't even flinch. And I'll be honest. I don't even play that many different games. I'm good for buying a new game at most once a year or so. I was just due for an upgrade in that department and I'd never owned a new, top of the line card before, so I just went for it.

I don't really know much at all about g-sync monitors. Linus says they're worth it tho.

Nope. Corsair H100i cpu cooler. Everything else is passively cooled with well done cable management. Everything is 100% threaded. Also a bit of custom cabling as well for tidiness and preventing useless connections. Things like Molex and SATA cables that always having 4 connections when you only need one plug.

If you're considering a new card but not the 1080, I think the 1060 is supposed to still do very well and even top the 980, and for under $250 here. (The 980 was selling for $500 just a few months ago) Lots of sites saying the 1060 tops it. Might be a good place to start. :)

GTX 980--- Over $600

GTX 1060---Around $400

GTX 1070----Around $600

GTX 1080---Between $800-$1000

Retail Prices not negotiated ones....

Again Skiz the PC looks really amazing!!!

The question i would have is what power supply are you using??
The reason i asked is the one my son picked has dedicated single connections(or modular connections), no multiple connections on the ends, they are all single and marked to fit into the power supply, and then to the board fans cards etc....And i thought all the new ones are designed like that ??

Corsair AX 760, fully modular. The molex cables that come with are the standard zip-zag style (http://outervision.com/img/psu/corsair/tx650/img10.jpg). The default SATA cables were the 4 connection type as well.

What psu did your son purchase?

EVGA Supernova 750 G2 80 Plus Gold

It came with a fancy bag and all separate connections

For my POS PC i got EVGA 500B and it has one connection and the tree of wires, it was cheap and works fine for me:D

Edit.. I just looked at a picture of your Power Supply and it looks like it has the same connections?? :idunno:

Got it now, you are talking about the power connections , now that makes sense Skiz for cosmetics, but the shitty case my son has didn't make a difference when i built his, defiantly not a fashion show there LOL!!!. It is clean but not even close to yours:D

But the actual Sata connections to the board are all single and they gave you ones that are elbowed for tight spots...

Another question Skiz...

He doesn't have a lot of things in his PC just 2 hard drives and a cd/dvd player I didn't recheck but i think i used separate connections to the power supply if you understand what i am saying?? Does it make a difference in the power if you use one connection to the power supply and connect multiple things on the other side??

And a few weeks later he bought the AMD Sapphire Nitro R9 390 Graphics card, and i had to pretty much take everything apart again just to get the fuckin card to fit in the case.. So like i said it is no showcase build but he is happy for now with it:D.. and when he is running it, it is like a sweat box in his room from the heat!!!!

I got some things from NCIX and when you mentioned Linus Tips, it was funny!!. He had some of his builds on display there and they were sic!!, my younger son has spoken to him and all that shit he critics he keeps (no charge), and he gets it before it is out for the public...
Lucky Prick!!!!

Debating selling it all or keeping it. I do most of my browsing on the phone or laptop these days. I really only come in my "office" these day to play GTA V. :ermm:

Also considered, if I keep the setup, selling the monitors and just buying a single 4K 40".

Update to the rig.

I'm done with water coolers for now. Over it. In 6 years or so I've been through a Corsair H60, H80, and H100i. I wasn't too impressed with the H60 so got the H80. It died and so the new build got an H100i. It has recently died. I considered the Kraken x62 but it gets very mixed reviews so fk all that.

I started looking at maybe redoing my build with a different cooler and case. As usual that spiraled into considering more and more parts until I was building new PC. I looked at using the FT03 case and doing Kaby Lake 7770K (or even waiting for Coffee Lake 8770K) + mobo + DDR4 (which is insanely expensive right now) and was looking at around $1600 already. No way Jose. Let's back up. Current rig with 4770K is still ripping through every game at ultra settings on a 2K monitor without flinching.

Did some research and opted to try the popular Noctua NH-D15. I wasn't going to have those ugly fans in my case tho so I also picked up some of their chromax black fans and the white heatsink covers. I left off the second optional fan as my RAM is a bit too tall to accommodate the other 140mm fan. I'd need a 120mm fan there to make everything flush but after testing I don't even need it.

I paid almost the same amount as I would have for the Kraken but I'm super happy with this air cooler. Idle temps are in the 20's and an hour of full load gaming has recorded a peak temp of 51 degrees. Air > water.

The problem with that many fans is are they helping or hindering? You ideally want air coming in to be drawn over components and then drawn out. Conflicting fans may mean deadzones in the case where little air movement happens.

looks good though :D

Meh. All's well. Gauging by temps, it’s operating exceptionally well. The two fans at the top are pulling any rising hot air out of the case. I can't remember what RPM they're set to but it's whatever the lowest setting was. Everything else is moving one direction, front to back. My mobo also has temp readings in several locations and everything is reading beautifully. :)

Updated with second GTX 1080 FTW. Mining about $15/day. Shouldn't take but 60 days or so to break even on the new card. :01:

(I have since fixed the cabling at the bottom and stuffed those wires behind the top cards wiring)

I like the black and white color scheme. Where you able to buy the white power cables (ATX power, 8-pin GPU) as a kit or each one individually? I thought about changing all the power cables for my PC, but my PSU (Corsair AX650) doesn't have cables available for it. I'd have to make them myself. I don't have the time to do it or the motivation. Plus, I'd have to see if there is a windowed side panel available for my Corsair Obsidian 800D. I know a solid side panel is available (or was). Then I would have to cut out my own opening and figure how to attach a plexiglass window.

I would definitely go with a single larger monitor. Is 40" large enough for 4k? I've seen people buy a 55" OLED (LG B7) for a monitor.

Update. New GPU and monitor.

I've really been wanting a 144Hz monitor for a while now. I'd honestly never even used one but people just don't shut up about them so I've been watching them for a couple months. Finally went with the 27" Acer Predator XB271HU. 2K, 144Hz, GSync. Now with a 27" and a 25" on the desk, hardware was becoming very cramped as my speakers were just peeking around the monitors. I considered a new desk but fk all that. I picked up a stacked monitor mount for $30 on Amazon and decided to give it a shot. I was hesitant at first but it's been about a week now and I love it. I feel like I'm less reliant now on constantly using two monitors and instead I'm using the new monitor for most tasks and the upper for secondary tasks like discord, music, etc.

The previous 2 x 1080s did well for gaming and even mining for a while. Now that crypto prices have dropped I've sold them and consolidated with a hefty 1080 Ti SC2 (and a small net profit of about $360 and a bunch of crypto)

I don't think God intended that sort of close to perfection clean thing when He created dust ... or laziness.

Not even gonna lie. I hardly clean it at all. And even that is a very minor wipe down. I'm a fairly clean person so my house doesn't have a ton of dust to begin with, but more than anything it's the H440 case I think. My Cooler Master 690 and my Fractal Design cases both accumulated more dust than this case. Both the intakes have filters and that's a massive help. Bottom and front. (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nzxt-h440-case-review,3734-3.html) I'm not the absolute biggest fan of NZXT products in general but their cases are top notch. So if you're looking for a cure to that pc cleaning laziness, give them a look.

I also realize I've been using the same motherboard, power supply, RAM for 4.5 years now. It might just be about that time... I've really been admiring the M.2 builds I see on PCPP. I'd like to build a little H200i rig but a lot of people have heat issues so I dunno.

Also, idol, did you ever pick up a 144Hz monitor? You were talking about it a couple years ago.

'Tweren't me so, no.

Last thing I did was upgrade my video card about a year ago. I basically only upgrade to support video games and if some of my other components are no longer edge, it's never been enough of a problem for me to notice.

Maybe if they released a decent game more frequently than every 3 years or so.

I've just put together a Louqe Ghost S1 build. It's a mini itx case. I opted for this route just to minimize the space my machine would occupy, plus it's a good looking case and you don't need a full size tower anymore to get powerful components inside. Made from milled aluminum it's as solid as can be; just extremely well built.

This was also the easiest PC I've ever built. Absolutely no hiccups or problems along the way. Not with the install, mobo, bios, nothing. It was seriously under an hour until I had everything inside and loading up a fresh Windows install. Crazy. Put the heatsink, fan and M.2 drive on the mobo. The case sides come off making things very simple. Screwed down the mobo, dropped in the PSU and GPU, plug everything in, and flip the switch. ezpz.

I can finally get rid of the old shiity table there that I've for some reason clung on to for decades. I keep my printer on the shelf below it and it's always been the perfect piece for that. Just need to find another place for the wireless printer.

Your builds are always amazing

I've wanted to post pictures of mine in this thread since forever, but I gave away one of my desktop PCs last year and sold the other early this month. I was using my laptop basically 100% of the time, so there was little point in keeping the others even "just in case". Also saves me the hassle of having to synchronize files between two computers, now everything is in a single one.

He also says that if your woman don't like it then sell her to the Apache. Harsh but fair.

Thanks! They're a ton of fun to build. And I fully understand having a pc that just sits. I think a few pages back in this thread there is me discussing getting rid of mine. But I enjoy it and dont know what else I would do with my office space so... I definitely use my laptop more than my desktop now, especially since my issued work laptop is a Macbook. That was really a driving factor in doing a mini itx build as well as it would allow for a much smaller footprint in the office. I'll do some more pics of the full setup at some point as I've been on the lookout for a new sit/stand desk.

@Idol- Tell W that I still have my previous rig so I'm not turning in my Texas card just yet. :cowboy:

It's mounted to the wall in the garage now to replace my painfully slow and old garage pc. It's ridiculous overkill for a garage computer tho honestly. I looked into selling it but figured I would likely only get around $800 for it since I pulled the gpu for the new rig, and any mini pc I had to go then build for $800 would be a vastly inferior machine. So I guess full ATX, RGB, white, wall-mounted, garage pc it is.
