View Full Version : TorrentLeech - now with ads

I logged into TL today and noticed a new mass PM-
Today we made a deal with an ad company, that will help us deal with the server costs a bit. Of course, VIPs will still enjoy a totally banner-free site. In addition, all the ads will be family and work-safe, with no popups or whatsoever and without sacrificing the browsing speed and experience,
Thank you for your understanding, and be sure that this at the end will be your gain and only!
// Staff
Of course, I did not see them until I unblocked Adblocker Plus (good prog by the way). I know that torrentleech easily makes $100K+/month from the pay to leechers (ie, "VIPs") so I find their new ads most unpleasant
The ads are rather large and unpleasant-

well at least their ads are family friendly. one big reason i dont use my filelist account was because of the obscene ads they have of women (not to mention that tracker totally sucks).

what ads? adblock plus (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1865/) + easylist + easyelement (http://easylist.adblockplus.org/) = hassle free browsing
you can also use adblock to remove portions of webpages you don't want to view, like the thing at the top of filemp3 that urges you to become a vip :)

Weird, I see the annoucement, and the space where the ads go, but I don't see any ads. I do have adblock installed, but it doesn't show any ads on the page that it's blocking.
Yay? =/

man they're harmless, don't be ticky tacky punks
their tracker rocks and these ads are just going to help them keep the site running, the site which most of you love,
these ads are nowhere near "large and unpleasant". and at least they don't have those "you could be having sex with these local hometown girls" lol
Just ignore them?

Ohhh, now I see.
The ads are loaded via a script from etology.com in that little frame. I have NoScript installed with Firefox, so NoScript doesn't allow the ads to load.
Firefox + Adblock + NoScript = Better internet. :)
still...they are big ads and they kinda stink...

Im pretty certain they do not make 100,000 off of their vip deals.
Youll notice they spend their money from VIP donations on seedboxes. They have quite alot of seedboxes if you didnt notice.
In any case the adds arent all that annoying. I didnt even notice them right away. You ussually look for the files which are in the middle of the page anyways.

they dont need the bills payed when they have so many VIP members paying them...

01-27-2007, 03:09 AM
Is that true about VIPs? They're just too lazy to seed, so they pay to leech? And here I am working my ass off, seeding like a sucker to one day earn VIP status, and all I needed was to pay for my pirated material? Damn.
Ya, the ads don't bother me a bit. I didn't notice them until you pointed it out. Thanks a lot! Now I can't stop looking at them. Man, they're so big, they take up 3/4 of the screen! Is it just me, or have they gotten bigger over the last couple of minutes?

Just use the Remove It Permanently extension if you're using Firefox if the ads bother you that much.

01-27-2007, 05:11 AM
Well I suppose you are all right in the "just block them" regard- they don't really pose too much of a threat to anyone. What I don't really like is the mass amounts of money they are making from pirated material- not only from the pay-to-leeches, but now ads. The site has something around 120,000 members (correct me if you have a more reliable figure, they have atleast 100k), of which 10,000-20,000 are easily the "VIPs". This alone is a jackpot, not to mention the ads to be seen by thousands.

They're not that intrusive, and don't pop up in anyone's face. Come on - support that tracker by clicking on them once in awhile. It will not cost you anything, and you don't have to sign up.

As if it's the site what you come to look for, as long as the torrents are easily browsable, who cares about the rest :P.

I think it is good for trackers to make money. the more money they make the longer they will be around, and if they ever get lawsuits maybe the will have the cash to fight em.
i don`t mind the ads as long as everything stays the same ;)

I think the advertising is justified. These sites are taking a significant risk given the extent the MPAA and RIAA are willing to go to have torrent sites shut down. They have to prepare for costly legal bills. You have to question the intelligence of companies willing to pay to have their products advertised on a private bittorrent tracker website. You would think those who have access to these websites will already be wary of misleading, click-tempting internet banner ads.
It does have an impact on the sites aesthetics though.
