Hi!
I plan to do a new (clean) xp install today, and my question is:
Which free(of cost) antivirus do you think is best/do you recommend?

I have only experience with Nod32, wich I like, but this time I will go for a free version!!

I highly recommend AVG Free.

Wikipedia Quote:

AVG Free Edition has spearheaded the company's growth. According to Grisoft, over 40 million users have AVG Anti-Virus protection, including users of the Free Edition.

AVG is really a great anti-virus program that has been around for a long time. You won't go wrong with it.

Shaw Cable has a free one built on F-Secure , called Shaw Secure that's a great program for Shaw users . Not sure if its only available in Canada tho .

Zap, I think this is the one your talking about ?

Actually it is powered by Kaspersky 2006. But before anyone decides to use it, just read this article http://www.webwereld.nl/articles/42488/shield
Maybe good to know. Doesn't mean the program isn't any good, but it's always good to know a little bit more why something like this is for free.

From that article.

"Although security experts, including Howes, say that Active Virus Shield does not behave in a malicious fashion or serve up unwanted ads, some are concerned that the product's end user license agreement (EULA) would allow AOL to send spam or serve up adware at some point in the future. "If it actually does any of the things stated in the EULA, we would actually flag it as spyware," said Christina Olson, a project manager with Stopbadware.org."

Correct, that's why I said that it doesn't mean the program isn't any good, but it's always good to know a little bit more why something like this is for free. So I'm not encouraging people to stop using it, but just simply stating a point cause this topic is about free anti-virus progs and it makes me wonder why on earth a EULA would contain those things if not for using it in the near future.

Using Avira Antivir myself. It's really good and the problems with updating are solved uptil now.

These threads always make me smile as I never pay for anything but when a OP asks for a "free program " I always respond with a free one thinking the poster has no access to a file sharing program , or chooses a free program . But AVG ? give me a fucking break .

Why? I have used it for a while and I use it with my new Vista notebook. I have never had a problem with it and I have never paid a dime for it. It works well and doesn't affect my computers performance one bit.

Well, if you want it free (and legit) I would say AVG too. I heard it has the same database as Kaspersky (And norton? or was it Nod32? lol)

I use avast and have had very few viruses in over 2 years.
Kaspersky is better in terms of accuracy, but that benefit is outweighed by it overeager virus recognition and overall intrusiveness.
