i just decided to giv a shot at newsgroups but the problem is that at my university we hv access only through http proxies whic require authentication......so is there any client which has http support because newsleecher doesnt :(

nope, usenet uses the nntp protocol. But having http proxies only means you cant use ftp/im/mail etc? They dont use http either.

No big deal,
You must use port 80 instead of 119, and fill all requirements (proxy server, outgoing port, username & passsword) in the SOCKS protocol option.

Or try a program named HTTP-Tunnel (in this case, you don't have to change port 119), it forwards NNTP packets to port 80 on that proxy server (HTTP-Tunnel acts as SOCKS servers so Newsleecher could connect through it)

The advantage is that you could share a NG account through VPN (Virtual Private Network) or SOCKS servers, or even Proxy servers (with trick).

GigaNews is the only UseNet provider I tried could connect to port 80 successfully.
