why won't that fit onto a dvd-r? The discs I have are 4.7GB.

It should fit on a standard 4.7 DVD+R disc. You should have no problem. If you still wanted to compress it, I guess you can use dvdshrink to do it.

Open nero burning rom

File / options / expert features / "Tick"Enable dvd overburning-maximum size 4500MB / Apply

That might help

? Is it an ISO? Have you tried a different dvd? Maybe it is just a bad disk. What is the message you are getting from nero? Is it just a general error or is it saying file too large for disc?

Because the actual usable space of a DVD±R closer to 4.46 GBs

Open it in DVDShrink and see what you can remove without compressing the video.
If it's an ISO, mount it with DaemonTools or similar so DVDShrink can access it.

There's a discrepancy between the way disk makers label disks (4.7gig) and what they actually hold (4.38gig), it has to do with how each is calculated by 1000 = 1kb or 1024= 1kb. I do not use Nero for making dvd's, sorry but it sucks at it. You can use Nero if you have already got a VIDEO_TS folder with the proper files. What I do is make a shortcut to nero Burning Rom on my desktop by going to Program Files > Ahead > Nero and rightclick the Nero.exe and send to desktop create shortcut. Now you can skip all of Start Smarts bull crap and open burning rom direct. As long as the drive listed above the New Compliation Wizard is the one you want when you open it, then on the left select DVD > DVD-Video. What you end up with is and empty Video disk template with audio and video_ts folders. By default the video_ts folder will be active so on the right copy all the files from the VIDEO_TS folder on your hard drive to the field on the left. You will see imediatly if they will fit or not. You can't just delete a file or two to make it fit, you have to reprocess the whole thing if its too big (dvdshrink).
