I know in Canada, you must pay 10%-15% in tips for the waiter/waitress after a meal, but is that based on your bill after the 14% tax or before it? Various people and sites say different things:blink: .

You don't have to pay any tips.... There is no law stating you must do so. UNLESS your just that generous.

In the UK you tip for good service if you feel like it and you tip however much you feel like.

rumour has it tips originated with coffeeshops having an empty cup with T.I.P.S. written on it, it stands for 'to insure prompt service' busy, wealthy people would chuck a penny into the cup so that they could jump the queue

I usually abide by the 15% rule but i just have a problem giving waiters more than $10 tip even if thats 15% of the total price of the meal.

Of course, if im paying for a table of 7 or more, it would be justified.

Agreed.

What difference is it to the bloody waiter if your steak dinner cost a tenner or a hundred quid?

Just tip if you feel the service was good,waiters do not earn a great deal and put up with loads of shit,be aware they could be doing anything to your food when you can't see them so it pays to be polite.

10% is a bit on the cheap side.

I only tip if I would eat at that place again in the future:P.

Otherwise I'd just pay the bill to the last penny and ignore the tip:unsure: It's not like I'd eat there again, with the waitress remember my face and putting snot in my Tofu.:pinch;

I tip based on service and attitude. To me that's what tipping is for, to reward good service. Waiters know that they rely on their tips, so if they are still surly then they desrve nowt. That's what they get.

Usually I tip 10% or 15% if the meal + service were top notch

I usually give them 10% rounded up to the next pound.

I say usually, but actually I usually have no change in my pocket, so I don't really give anything, and I don't believe in adding the tip to the bill, 'cos then you don't know if the girl that served you actually gets it or not.
