Why did you start a new thread?

I'll ask again: Are there any preferences like screen size, weight, battery life etc?

I dunno....

Again, screen size at least 17".

Weight? Doesn't matter. It's going to be stationary most of the time, and her current one is a brick.

Battery life?

If it's not really for portability then why a laptop?

A desktop PC performs much better for less money.

My Mom is handicapped and can't climb stairs. She wants a laptop so that the computer can sit on a small side table, kitchen table, whatever. She doesn't want a computer desk anywhere downstairs.

Alright, back to the drawing board (for the last time). I've raised the monetary limit to $1,500. I also spoke to Mum and she doesn't want to get rid of the small table that her current laptop is on, so the size needs to remain the same. Basically, a small screen.

This is what I'm considering ATM.

Dell Inspiron E1405 Dual Core for $1,349. Looks darn good to me.

Opinions?

I personally would tell you to get a MacBook, after my old laptop died I got one and have yet to look back. It takes up very little space and is also very thin.

However this computer will work just fine and is not bad for the price (although go to fatwallet.com they always have dell coupon codes). I would recommend that you get 2Gb of RAM regardless. Vista loves to eat memory.

Also what will the computer primarily be used for?

Yup. That's the location of some unsuspecting soul near the north end of Vancouver street, Nelson, British Columbia.

I have no plans to. It's taken me long enough to get Mom learning decently. No way we're starting over.

Besides, I would never give Apple another penny after my two iPods have died.

Thats exactly what I was going to say. An independent 7600 with a slightly slower core 2 duo would be a way better move.

Why? It's for my Mom, who will never play a single game on it.

I intentionally skimped on the graphics "card" b/c she doesn't need it. I got the nice processor b/c it will last her a while.
