Your parents tell you they have a rare work of art that could be worth Millions, but they're not sure if it's...
1. Original/Signed/Authentic.
2. Legally theirs to own as it was given to them as a present.
3. Worth Anything. :idunno:

I suppose you could start off by checking the phone book, have a look for any business that does art appraisals or art authentications locally.

Also look for antique shops or art galleries, if nothing else, you could ask them who they'd use, if they don't do that sort of thing themselves.

And do get more than one opinion, from separate firms.

Contact a (good) auction house like Sothebeys, or Christies etc,
They have experts there which can verify the piece. (in seconds if it is famous)
They will probably ask you to send a photo of front and back, or if you can bring it by or if they are really excited, or you are a mega good customer they will come by.
They should verify it for free
I advise you to contact several auction houses for a second opinion.
If you have any paper work etc on the piece is very useful.
They will advise on the rest.
As to owner ship, first find out if it is worth anything, then contact those who gave the piece for confirmation.

Who do they think the piece was made by? American or European or?
