View Full Version : Rich from donations?

I'm certain that on many trackers (the big ones) they make a lot of money from donations, anyone have an idea of HOW much? Do you think anybody can LIVE off of just running a tracker?

I think it is very possible and i also belive that some actually do but i am betting it is just a NICE second income. Some of the bigger and better sites have more donations then needed to run the site and i really find it hard to belive that u have that much extra that they dont spend ANY of it on themselves or for themselves at some point or another.

I'd be very surprised if many of those were accurate at all. Most medium sized trackers probably bring in less than $5,000 a year and most or all of it goes right back to pay for server costs and upgrades

a few sites im positive of

pisexy

others were just guess
but im sure that TL is somewhat accurate aswell

and ftwr should be allowed to accept donations...they dont deserve donations..horrible torrent tracker

Perhaps the community reps here can give us an accurate answer to this question? (at least based on their own tracker)

007™

anyone can make a good and quite accurate estimate:

ex. pisexy.org

VIP

VIP costs: 12.95 for 2 weeks then 8.95 Recurring.
VIP Members: 1000-1100

VIP Sub-Total for 2 weeks: 12,950 - 14,245
VIP Sub-Total for Recurring: 8,950 - 9,845
VIP Total: 1st Month: 21,900 - 24,090

Towndrunk Draw
Held few months back

Tickets: 5/each
Tickets Sold: +*,000 (not sure)
Cost of Prizes: <5,000
Sub-Total: over 20,000, i calculated back then.
Total: 15,000 in 3 months

Totals
VIP Total: 98450 - 108295/11 months
21,900 - 24,090/ 1st month
120,350- 132385/12 months

TD Draw Total: 15,000

Total for 2006: 135,350 - 145,385/year

My guess was +125,000 so i was pretty close

IPT: ill do it later :P

Myself as well as wildbytes answered similiar questions in another thread this week.
I spend a little over $200 a month on my webserver alone.
I clearly list this in my sites faq page.
This figure does not include the amount that I spend on the seedboxes that alot of the staff use to post new files with. I myself invest roughly $500 into the site to cover 1/4 the cost of the seedboxes. I have several other staff who donate on a monthly basis to cover the costs, as well as a few regular donators. In all honesty youll probably see about 75% of the sites with < 10,000 users with staff putting money into keeping the sites alive themselves.
I know of at least 1 site that makes over $50,000 a month income after paying their server fees. Wont give the sites name though. Its sites like that, that give torrenting in general a bad name.

P.S. Some of the totals on page1 may be close but alot are probably overstating how much some sites take in.

Alot of those figures are just guesses at that. To prove them inaccurate oink spent over $40,000 last month or the month before just on webservers (if I recall correctly.). So I think they probably get over the figure posted. Also youll notice those figures show how much (in estimation) gets taken in. It doesnt state how much they spend on their servers or their boxes ect...

Pisexy and TL bring in alot of cash thats for sure. TL has many servers and spends alot on the site also. Pisexy aka Pimpie he just takes the money has his only job says he goes on trips and buys toys for him self. Why you think that shity ass site has been listed in scene access and all there uploaders are targeted bt different scene groups, some other sites are also for a different reason, but pisexy spend none of the money on the site or anything other then him self...

I am not sure what all the other sistes make, but i know of some good sites that just make it each month with donations. Some sites like Bitsoup will spamm the crap out of you for cash. I deleted my self from that crap site when i started to get 2 to 3 pms every day on buying gigs to help my ratio and buying access to ftp servers. This site has also been on scene releases..

There are many sites that are just out for your Cash and there are good sites that hardly every push or even ask your donations.

TL I cannot confirm or deny if they make money. I do know for a fact they spend a TON of money on seedboxes that feed their site. Whether or not they spend all the money taken in on those boxes I cannot answer. But just know alot if not all of the money taken in is spent on those boxes.
PI as wildbytes mentioned... does and is confirmed to use the money on himself.
Somewhat noticeable fact... MOST if not all sites... thats continually spam your inbox asking for donations are in it for the money.

ACiD
03-02-2007, 09:21 PM
Torrent sites that are in it for the money usually aren't very good torrent sites anyways. People always think making a torrent site will make you rich, far from it.. DigitalHive does good for donations and we have never asked a single person for a donation nor do we have any ads, if we get excess donations we use every $1 for upgrades or getting new servers. The numbers on that list, I would say are far from fact, not even close I bet.. Servers are expensive, our new site server costs us around 460 Euros a month not including boxes and other servers. Most sites use the donations just for the site and not for themselves.

And then theres sites like ScP, Funfile etc who are all about the scam, weather it be using donation money for personal things or selling users lists etc.

There will always be people out there after the "quick rich" idea.

TheFoX
03-03-2007, 01:02 AM
Yep... ScP was a rip of the ScT name, and FunFile is a rip of the FSC name. There will always be those who wish to profit from the hard work of others, and that excludes the vultures who reg a domain after the demise of a popular community, so they can scam in the name of the dead community.

There should be a few threads in these forums about SCP not sure about funfile though.

SCP = ScenePiracy if you want to search for the full name to find better results.

i heard ThePirateBay makes 60 Grand a month from the advertisers on their site
thats some serious money

ACiD
03-04-2007, 09:30 AM
I would say that Pirate Bay is in a little bit different category then the sites that were originally discussed. It is a public site, login information is not necessary, you don't really have to worry about getting scammed on there. I believe it is true that they make a pile of money, but they aren't as much of a "community" as private sites. I couldn't imagine how much their server bills are each month, as well as their legal fees. Remember the bigger the sites, the more money they have to spend to keep up with the demand, I dont know their user count but I can imagine its HUGE, far more then most of the private communities that average between 20,000-50,000 users..

I would guess their ads are a source of safe revenue for them to cover their costs and make a little bit extra, the people donating to their site is usually for the cause, or for whatever big thing they are trying to accomplish ie; "Sealand" idea.. All the power too them though, they take a lot of the attention away from our smaller sites! :-P

There's nothing wrong with having ads on a site, I don't think its necessary to try to trick users into clicking on things or spamming them with links to other places. In the end it all comes down to the owners/staff decisions on how they want their site to be run. Some sites don't make enough donations and have to use ads to cover their costs or just want extra $ to upgrade and expand their sites..

sert

I don't have any problem with ads and I think, I never see them anyway, using adblock & easylist (http://easylist.adblockplus.org/).

To make money from ads you don't have to click on them, google pays according to views. I don't block ads so the site owners don't get paid per view, but because I find them waste of bandwidth & distractive.
