I have a lot of WMA files i would like to convert to MP3 and was wondering what would be the best way to go about it ie programmes. Also, if anyone knows of a programme which will convert them in batches as opposed to one at a time (i have over 1000 to convert :( )

dbpoweramp music converter can do this.
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm
you may also need the windows audio codec, its on the page there.
can do batch encode, can even add playlists, so just creata a playlist and open with dbpoweramp and it will do it. :)

I did the same last week and used WMA 2 MP3 converter (http://www.wma-mp3.com/)

Its only shareware, trial lasts 15 days,

Easy CD-DA 5.0 is the best i've found so far, it can convert between just about any formats and qualities, it's easy to use and you can convert many files at once.
