Burning .mpg Through Cd Burner?

Is it true if i burn Gangs of new york.mpg onto a normal blank CD using my burner i would be able to watch it on dvd?

or do i have to use a program?

if the mpg..is under 650(74 min cd)/700mb(80 min cd) and your burner/software can make vcd/svcds you can burn it on a cd-r/cd-rw.. also if your dvd player can play vcd/svcd's .. to see if your dvd is compatible and you want to know how to burn vcd/svcds and more.. go to www.vcdhelp.com ..i hope that helps :)
