RSS is a mechanism for finding out when a web page changes.

You install an RSS client on your pc, and it will check the specified RSS feed every few hours/days for new information, when it finds anything new it will pop up a little box listing the subjects of the new items, and if you click on any of them it will show you more information essentially taking you to the web page in question.

Clients include SharpReader, Feedreader, RssReader, NewzCrawler and various others.

RSS is way for a server (in this case a torrent website) to present to a client (in this case your computer) a summary of the latest "entries" (in this case torrent files -- but for news websites it would mean latest news headlines).

When you "subscribe" to the feed, you instruct your RSS client to visit the server frequently and retrieve the information about the latest "entries". You can then do whatever; for example, some BitTorrent clients allow you to subscribe to a feed (which means your client will visit it frequently and retrieve information about the latest entries) and monitor specific keywords that you like, so that the client automatically starts downloading the torrents that have those keywords. For example you can monitor the word "Heroes" in a server's RSS feed, in which case if an entry appears with that word (that is, whenever a new torrent of a Heroes episode is uploaded to the server), your client will immediately start downloading it. Cool, huh?
