OK, so I'm looking at the speeds that I'm getting from GrabIt, and I'm thinking about how I always hear that with newsgroups, your connection is maximized. Well, since I have a 6.5MB connection, shouldn't I be getting like 6500+ KB/s?

I'm using my ISP's news server BTW.

Maybe you have 5 Mbps instead of 5 MB?
Anyway, my cable ISP advertised speed is 5Mbps, and I get around 700-900KB/s from Usenetserver SSL connections.

5000 kb/s (kbps) = 625 kB/s

kb is kilobits and kB is kilobytes. One byte is 8 bits. GrabIt displays the speeds in kilobytes per seconds, if I remember correctly.

This is further complicated by the fact in UK we have Max DSL which tends to mean speeds up to 8 Meg. I tend to range between 4-6 Meg on usenet thats because that happens to be my speed for that time of day. Coupled with traffic shaping ISP's speeds can wildly differ. All I can say is I find usenet about 10 times faster than Bit Torrent lol.

I used to have roadrunners premium service . It was like 70 or 80 bucks a month. I think my connection was 8 or 9mbps. I could ALMOST download a megabyte per second, I think. I get mixed up with all the bytes, but it was 900-1000 something per second. Think I was downloading 900-1000KB per second. That's almost a megabyte per second right?

In a simple answer, yes, you are maxing your connection.

If you notice the tags on both those images, kb/s and kB/s, is the difference. If you divide the kb/s by 8, then you get your "theoretical" max speed, 616kB/s. Though it's never that high, just like a HDD is never the exact size as advertised. 300GB = 287GB or so.

Well, when it was still billed separately, it was 10€/month, but a while back they changed it so that it's included with the rent of the apartment and is not billed separately, but I suppose it's still about the same price.

10 Euros a month! 10 Euros a month! I am paying 36 Euros a month for a crappy 4 Mb connection. Right, I am phoning up tomorrow and demanding a speed increase, otherwise I am moving to Finland. Another example of Rip-Off-Britain. Hurumph!

Well, TOAS is a non-profit student housing organization so the prices are a bit higher in the commercial market. Here's some pricing of a commercial Finnish ISP (in finnish but you get the idea): http://www.sonera.fi/artikkeli2/0,3843,l-fi_h-13732_a-335645,00.html

you got that wrong...

If you get 5,162kb (Kilobits) then your getting 5mb (megabits)...

Its not hard to work out what your getting... It will be shown in either kb or KB so your getting 5,162kb (5mb) which is equal to 645KB or just over half a MB.

From my ISP's news server I get anywhere from 50kbps to the 150's on a good day. With the premium news server just under 200kbps. The max download is rated at 384 - so I only get a little over half of that:angry:

FIOS (fiber optics) is coming next year - maybe - so no updgrades to our DSL until then.
