firefox will not work with wine i think. You will need a desktop installed. Try to follow my instructions from page 25 of this thread and let me know how it goes.

I also tried to re-install KDE and firefox, but nothing....
have you tried to just start it from command line (the cmd should be 'firefox' or 'firefox-bin', just type fire and hit tab)?
you really shouldnt need any of kde to run firefox.

wine is only for windows application (utorrent here)
firefox and vnc is cross-platform compatible, meaning it runs natively in linux.

and BTW, the KDE install guide on page 25 dosent work... KDE installs but dosent boot when I connect with VNC.

And yes, I restarted the vncserver.

When I try to install KDE and Firefox I get the following message:
....
Index Error: list index out of range

How I can avoid this problem?
--------------------------------------------------

It seems that I have a problem with 'yum'...
In the beginning, when I installed 3 apps: wine, vnc and xterm, it took me 3 times to repeat the same commands in order to install those programs. The same thing is with this f.... 'yum' :)

my FC4 cannot find any mirrors and dies...Either I need to increase timeout time in .conf file or just to repeat my commands until yum downloads and installs all packages.

i still can't seem to figure out how to get the webui to work.

On uTorrent, go to preferences and on the side tree, go to Advanced >> WebUI - tick Enable Web Interface and also, put your desired username and password for the webUI.
I also recommend putting an alternative port (8080 is fine).
Now, use your FTP client and login to your server. Put SFTP as the mode, put in the hostname/IP and port should be the default 22.
Boom! You should see all the files in your server now.
Browse to /root/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/root/Application Data/uTorrent/
Get WebUI (http://download.utorrent.com/beta/webui_v0.310_beta_2.rar) and extract webui.zip. Now, transfer webui.zip to the directory that I specified above (through SFTP of course). Btw, you usually just to drag and drop the file.
Voila! WebUI is installed.

In tracker like tl you should get 1-2 mb/s up, depends of the seed leecher of the torrent.

i just delete everything from both the files and info folders manually with my cuteftp but there's probably another way. i just don't know how.

you say you have few torrents... do you mean few "torrents" on utorrent, what about "files" on disk?
did you change your default save path on u torrent after some time, you may need to check that folder in case you forgot there may be some left overs.

the only way i know how to open up the trash and delete the files is to open up cuteftp and go to the root folder, then local folder, then the share folder, then the trash folder. there are two separate
folders in there, one that says files and one that says info i refresh if cuteftp was already open then i select all the files in folders and delete them. (all of the files in the files and info folders) like i said there has to be a better way but this is how i do it because i don't know any other way. good luck.

Installing uTorrent on a Leeware

Updates
11-Apr: Added a bit of information on speed issues
3-Apr: Added a few more things on how to install uTorrent on a Leaseweb server.

TONS of people have been PMing me lately to set up their Leeware boxes, so I guess I should just post a guide on how to do it ;) This guide is intended for Leeware servers only, but it may work with other servers running RPM based distributions (aka distros) as well. Firstly, you need to get the following applications:

Putty (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/%7Esgtatham/putty/download.html) or any other SSH client
FTP Client (with SFTP support) like CuteFTP, WinSCP, WS_FTP, etc.
TightVNC (http://www.tightvnc.com/) or any other VNC ViewerNow, follow instructions carefully.

Open up Putty. On the left tree, go to Session.
Under Hostname (or IP address) type your IP or hostname (i.e. vpsxxx.leeware.com)
Choose SSH (port 22)
Under Saved Sessions, type something like "My Leeware Box" and press Save. (Later on, you can just load the session, so you don't have to do the previous steps again)
Press Open.
Now, a black screen should come up (terminal/command prompt).
Enter your root account details - (username, password)
Notice, when you type in the password, nothing appears on the screen! That's not a bug - it's normal. Btw, you can also paste the password by right click (again, putty won't display anything on screen).
At this point, you should be logged on. Yay, we can install some stuff now.
Type yum -y install xterm wine vnc-server to install those 3 apps: xterm (a GUI terminal), wine (to emulate windows), and VNC server (to allow you to remote control your server with a GUI).
After a while, you should see that those 3 apps are installed.
Download uTorrent onto your server. Type wget http://download.utorrent.com/1.6.1/utorrent.exe
Start VNC server, type vncserver :1
Enter any password of your choice for the VNC server.
Now, VNC server should be started. So, you can login with VNC viewer (which you installed on YOUR PC).
The server address is: :1 or :1. (e.g. vps778.leeware.com:1)
Now, a desktop should appear with a terminal/command prompt on the top left hand corner.
Run uTorrent. Type wine utorrent.exe.
w00t! uTorrent should be up and running now. Also, you should go to preferences and change the settings to whatever you want. :DBut, what about webUI? Well, you can install the WebUI through SSH, but since lots of people asked me about how to get files from their box to their HDD, I'll just teach you how to do it using SFTP.

Voila! WebUI is installed.:yahoo:

But, where is it, where's the WebUI?
Go to http://hostname:port/gui/ (http://hostname/gui/) with your browser and login with your chosen username and password.
For example: http://vpsxxx.leeware.com:8080/gui/

More Frequently Asked Questions

Will uTorrent still run if I close VNC and Putty?
Yeah, it will still run. VNC and Putty is just to control your server.

How do I add torrents to the WebUI?
Well, that's simple - just press the (+) button on the WebUI. :) Alternatively, you might want to get this firefox extension (http://thinkpond.org/content/view/13/32/) so you can just drag and drop links from torrent sites.

Yeah, so I get all this. But how do I download stuff from the box to my server?
Use FTP. When you installed the WebUI, you're basically uploading webui.zip on to the server. Here, you do the reverse (Yeah, you can drag and drop).

GRRR! I'm getting slow speeds! What do I do? NEW!
If you used the speed guide on uTorrent and set it to xxx/100mbps, you should be getting the maximum speeds out of your leeware. You have to also remember that speeds depend on the torrent as well (I suggest you check peers list to see others' speeds). Other than that, I HAVE NO CLUE ON HOW TO IMPROVE THE SPEED (please don't PM me about this). Live with it, or if you're getting ridiculously low speeds then email lee.

OMG, Where does uTorrent save the files?
Wherever you set it to in Preferences. The default is /root/. (There's nothing wrong with the default directory btw, you don't need to change it.)

Sh*t, my server just crashed and WebUI ain't running anymore, what do I do?
Well, it's a simple process. Just login to your server using Putty. Type vncserver :1 to run VNC server again. Login to the VNC server using VNC viewer, and run uTorrent from the terminal - wine utorrent.exe. Now, everything should be fine. (For people who are more 1337 with Linux, if you want you can edit the VNC start up file (on ~/.vnc/ to run uTorrent automatically when VNC starts to make life easier).

How do I run Firefox and do other stuff on the server?
This guide is only for installing uTorrent and plus, on a Leeware, there's really no point installing Firefox and other applications because it's so slow (you get what you pay for).

What!!!?? There are no screenshots!!!
Yeah, not at the moment. I might add some later on.

Will you be making a guide for installing TorrentFlux, rTorrent, and etc?
No, IMO uTorrent is highly superior to the other clients. The WebUI is sexy ;)

I tried this on a Leaseweb Express server but it doesn't work.
Yeah, leaseweb servers doesn't have SFTP. The installation process is a bit more complicated. First, you need to add a repository (like RPMForge (http://wiki.centos.org/Repositories/RPMForge)) which contains: xterm, wine, vnc-server and etc. You also need to install fonts (msttcorefonts) and you'd need to install WebUI by using wget and unrar (not built-in you need to install this as well). You might also want to install an FTP server (proftpd), you would also need to configure it after it's installed.

I read all of this, but I'm still stuck...
I am afraid you're just too much of a n00b to use a Linux Server - get Windows!!

LOL Just joking, you can PM me (with your AIM/MSN/YAHOO, etc. preferably), and I'll see what I can do.

P.S. This guide might contain some errors - so feel free to comment and give feedback.

I installed KDE desktop and it works like a charm.

Close VNC.

Open putty and login as root.

type: yum groupinstall "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"

This will install the packages needed for KDE. For leeware, have in mind that it will use a bit of space so it's up to you guys if you want to proceed with it.
It might also take some time to download and install the packages so grab a coffee and wait.

OK after you install the packages go to:

/etc/sysconfig/

If you are not familiar with linux please follow the instructions EXACTLY as i give them to you.

type: vi desktop
press: a
type: DESKTOP="KDE" (If there exists another desktop entry, you probably have another desktop installed and you don't need to do this anyway)
press: ENTER (The enter key on your keyboard)
type: DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE"
press: ESC (The escape key on your keyboard)
type: :wq! (That's colon w q exclamation mark)
press: ENTER (The enter key on your keyboard)

That's it. If you did everything ok, KDE is your default desktop now and when you re-open VNC you will have a nice desktop to work with.
i did everything you said but i am still seeing TWM when i connect to vncserver (and yes i had killed the server before installing kde)
how can i fix this?
thanks a lot
btw: this guide works 100% on vectoral, at least with fedora installed.

edit: i managed to uninstall TWM with yum remove xorg-x11-twm but now i dont see kde at all

when installing kde i got this error:

I had to edit the file xstartup in root/.vnc
and add the line startkde at the end of that file
and then restart the vnc server with the vncserver -kill :1
and then start it again

seems like i have to save my torrents on a diffrent partition how do i do this? i have freebsd dedicated server......

no you leave webui zipped!! do not unzip the webui. just transfer webui to the path
to /root/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/root/Application Data/uTorrent/

make sure you go into utorrent on your vcn viewer and select the port leave it as 8080. then go to webui
https://vps.tzulo.com:xxxx (https://vps.tzulo.com/):8080/gui/ (http://hosename/gui/)

then your webui will appear.

make sure you view it on firefox
Ok I just tryed as you said and I get
404- NOT FOUND

I did try just http:too
and it didn't workhttps://server IP (https://vps.tzulo.com/):8080/gui/ (http://hosename/gui/)

Ok, I am having some SERIOUS problems. I just got a tzulo server today. I follwed all of the steps, but cant get vnc to work. I am setting up this server from a university internet connection and as such most of my ports are closed. In order to get putty to connect, I had to run your freedom and run putty with a proxy server. This might be the problem of why I cant get VNC viewer to work.

Because I cant get any results on vnc viewer I am not sure of a few things. The first is what should I be trying to connect to in vnc viewer? IPADDY:1?

Also, is there some way to use a vnc viewer through a proxy server like I have done with putty?

Another thing I am somewhat unclear about is the future use of putty/vnc viewer. Will I have to keep using these programs?, or are they mainyl for set up purposes? If they are mainly for set up purposes I can complete the set up at a friends house and would save me the hassle of getting a proxy with VNC. However if I am going to have to use these programs on a day to day basis to add new torrents, etc then, I am kinda screwed and will have to find a more permanant solution.

I guess I have a few issues in this thread that I have outlined. The main thing I need to know is how to connect with VNC viewer on tzulo...is it IPADDY:1?

Thank you very much for your time.

here is a copy of my post regarding to VPS

i like to rent a VPS, most of them working on linux (with win its mush more expensive)

is there a utotrrne for linux?

if the answer is yes, then from where i can download it?

is it stable?

i told that the linux work on a server is different, it work
using kind of "dos" window, and not like 'windows' linux.

what should i do and need to do? do i need to install
'home' linux on linux server?
what about a browser?

it will be my first time using VPS, so i'll have to learn 2 things,
working on\with VPS and linux.i understand that this guide its about linux server.

any chance for picture with this guide? well, im not familiar
with server and linux for me like black hole :frusty:

sorry for ny ignorant, is VPS = terminal?

i have been told that it will look like my desktop,
and all i have to do is 'play' around like i do on my HD.
amm.. well, all that is true if we talking about windows server.
with linux.. (grrrr..) is like 'gibrish'(*) for me.

anyhow, i will not rent a (part of) linux server till i feel i understand it good enough, no point of waste one month
renting just to learn how to install utorrent and what ever
need more.

with some picture i'll be more relax with no panic.

And yeah, uTorrent won't load at all. Any ideas as to why?

It's probably too late for the stroj and bennez, but i had some of the same problems as them so i'll list some of the things you could try. For stroj's problem i would guess it's missing fonts or something that causes the vncserver to fail to start. Sometimes it'll give an error when it starts but if not it will be written in a log file. The location is located in the .vnc folder and it should tell you the name, look at it and try to find the errors. As for the failure on the rpm, this can probably be fixed by editing the updates-released.repo file in /etc/yum.repos.d I found that they will edit out some of the mirrors with a # sign and they will also put a $ sign in place of the release that you need to change to release you're on.

Hope that helps some people cause at first i spent hours trying to get things to work, but when i figured out what was wrong i set up another one in 15 minutes or so.

Hey just a quick question, would this work on any dedicated server? or is this guide for leeware.com's servers, and will it work with centos 4?

sorry if its a stupid question, im just a little confused..

naq
01-08-2008, 02:21 PM
balbaid: that message means libstdc++ is already installed, most likely through yum. If you want to install the newer version, you can type this first: yum remove libstdc++. But I wouldn't advise doing that as it can break compatibility, the prefer method of installing new apps is through the package management system (yum).

vizard: the general idea of this guide will work on any linux system (install vnc, wine, utorrent), but the process for each is slightly different. For Centos 4, you have to add some extra repositories first (instructions here (http://www.osresources.com/11_6_en.html)), then this guide should work just fine.

It's called aptitude.

Use apt-get and not yum.

Who buys a dedicated server or a VPS with shell access and doesn't understand the basics to administering it? ;p
