I just ran a defrag that completed saying it couldn't defrag a file.

Documents And Settings/Mynamehere/test

This file is 2gb and I have no idea what it's for...Should I delete it?

Ignore that. If you don't know what the file is, don't dare delete it haphazardly.

Your question is waaaay too vague to answer with a yes or no, though.

Look at the properties, description, etc. Try to determine what the file is from.

Also, what is the extension of the file?

It just says "test" with the generic icon you get for a file that needs to be told what to be opened with.

Created 13th December, 2006

Type of file: file

I'm thinking it might have been a test-backup of something.

I'm burning it to DVD now so I can restore it if I need to.

I think it would be safe enough to delete.

My defrag gets to 14% of compressing files before it says "Completed: Some files could not be defragmented" that test is one of them.

if it was a critical file, it wouldn't be under Documents And Settings/Mynamehere/test ....

Is delete working ? If not the file is somehow in use (maybe some temporary outputfile) and a restart should make it deletable. Also you should check the change permissions under properties

Well, I deleted the file after backing it up to DVD.

Started playing STALKER.

Got a hard restart and my monitor would just say "No Signal". Needed to switch off the system at the mains before I could actually see the bootup on the monitor. Then, when it gets to the XP loading screen, it finishes loading and restarts again. Once again, the monitor says "No Signal"

I can boot up in Safe Mode fine. I got into safe mode and replaced the Test file, but when trying to restart into normal windows, the same problem happened.

I'm wondering if this has nothing to do with the file, but my graphics card (Geforce 6800 Ultra) overheating.

Did a system restore to just before I deleted the file and got it running again. I wish I knew what caused it though, and why replacing the file into the folder didn't work.

this can't happen because of one file under Documents And Settings/Mynamehere/test ... :/
1. do you have multiple accounts configured ? If so try another or try creating a new one and log-in into that
2. repair installation often helps and doesn't hurt.

WOW! What a mission.

So, after the last post, Windows booted up, I restarted again and got the same No Signal problem. Then my 3D card wouldnt start properly! Drove to the nearest PC garage and got some compressed air and cleaned the entire case out. There was a lot of dust at the 3D Card connectors, also there seemed to be a loose connection, because after wiggling the card around it started powering up again when I rebooted.

Everything seems to work now, but I'm still not sure if the Windows not booting problem was caused by that file or from dust in the CPU or something.

I'm quite sure the startup problem wasn't caused by deleting that file.

Right-click the file and choose "Hidden", then forget about it. :whistling

I had the same problem before, it was caused by me stopping a hd benchmark before it had completed. I'm pretty sure it was PCMark or SiSoftware Sandra I'd been using. If you've used either of those programs, running a hd benchmark to completion might get rid of it.
