Do any of the popular learning torrents sites ever open up for new members, do you know? They're the main reason I started looking into private sites, since public ones rarely seem to have this sort of stuff (Or if they do it has 1 seed uploading at 5kb/s) ...

Bitspyder was open a little while ago, keep checking their website, its bound to be open for a short period every now and them. Elbitz was also open a few days ago, but isn't anymore. Oink won't ever be opening again (according to a staff post here), and Bitme probably won't either.

That is good news... On the signup page it says "Open sign-up limit (15,000) has been reached. Invites only.". So maybe if the number of users goes under 15000 it'll open up?

learnbits is easy. Just join their irc (irc://irc.p2p-network.org/lb-invite) and ask POLITELY for one. They are really great people.

My pref.
Largest - Bitme
oldest and largest e-learning tracker, also allows non e-learning stuffs like plugins , tough on rules , worst staff.

Best - Bitspyder
Cool features, fresh looks, good community and the second largest, good staff, tough on rules.

Up and comming - Learnbits
Was a great community, but they lots all their contents couple of times, Nice and friendly staff. Hope they'll catch up pretty quick

Oink
Not an e-learning tracker, but has many contents. specially music related.

IT DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR:

I have rated them according to its contents as follows:

FOR GENERAL INTEREST IN DESCENDING ORDER:
Bitme.org :w00t:
Bitspyder.net
Demonoid.com
Learnbits.org
Elbitz.net

FOR ENGINEERING OR IT RELATED STUFF IN DESCENDING ORDER:
Bitme.org :w00t:
Bitspyder.net
Learnbits.org
Elbitz.net
Demonoid.com

FOR LANGUAGES IN DESCENDING ORDER:
Bitme.org :w00t:
Demonoid.com
Bitspyder.net
Elbitz.net
Learnbits.org

If you are looking for speed, Bitme and Bitspyder are the best.
If you are looking for a well presented site, Bitspyder and Demonoid are/were the best.
As you can see, though Bitme wins in all categories it is not the best presented site.
If you are looking for medical books, Bitme is also the first choice and then docs.torrents.ro which I haven't mentioned above.

Demonoid is down. Let's hope Demonoid come back on.
