When you say fantasy, i think about mystical creatures.
Im not the biggest lord of the rings fan, But for this category i dont think there is many movies that beat that.
Matrix is of course an awesome movie, But would sooner put it into scifi than fantasy.

omg - PotC are awful - except for Depps performances...

want a great Fantasy film? try 1985s Legend, overlook the usual so-so tom cruise performance and enjoy Mia Sara, Tim Curry and a wonderful story by William Hjortsberg and direction by Ridley Scott...

Pans Labyrinth is a pretty interesting take and of course LOTR trilogy was very well done considering what it had to stand up to.
