http://www.slyck.com/newspics/piratebay2.jpgReleasing Nine Inch Nail material online is an avenue the industrial rock band has been familiar with some time. Many tracks are readily available one the NIN.com website, downloadable via the traditional client/server method. However in a brief announcement (http://www.nin.com/current/index.html) made yesterday, a surprising element appeared. Not that new material was available for download, but that it was available via the BitTorrent protocol. Even more surprisingly, the torrents were uploaded to The Pirate Bay.

The Pirate Bay has been a quandary for the entertainment industry, as it has defiantly remained one of the largest - if not most popular - BitTorrent trackers/indexers. Despite a brief shut down in May of 2006, The Pirate Bay continues to remain a symbol of the P2P and BitTorrent community.

Although it has earned the scorn of the US entertainment industry, it appears that not all entertainers feel hostile towards the Swedish BitTorrent site - particularly Trent Reznor. Three audio tracks are currently being indexed by The Pirate Bay, "Capital G", "My Violent Heart", and "Me, I'm Not." This is an interesting move by NIN, and one that lends a hand of legitimacy to The Pirate Bay - as it shows that entertainers realize the importance of reaching out to their target audience.

Rightly Said Skizo... And I love the way they announced it too:
"As a reward for stealing Year Zero, we've prepared the next batch of multitrack audio files for you to download."

Trent rocks for doing all these multi-track things and letting fans remix his albums. It was also cool the way he leaked out the Broken movie and Closure DVD oo the pirate bay for a Christmas present.

Artists fighting back. Hurrah for file sharing :)

I think it may be just a tactic to get music out there and see what will be popular for the next album.

A kind of new age marketing analysis if you will. See what's going to be popular, then put tracks with a similar style on an album and sell it.

And with his dvd release leak, what better way to let people sample what is going to be on the dvd before asking for it for christmas.

Which DVD, Closure? I thought that was postponed indefinitely and that's why Trent leaked it?

As for the leaked tracks, he's also planning on releasing the multi-tracks for the entire Year Zero album and has leaked 4 full songs prior to the albums release.

In live shows before the album came out, he kept saying "You can download the new album 2 weeks before it comes out" or "You can steal the album in a few weeks." I wouldn't be surprised if he's doing this as a big "Fuck You" to Interscope.
