I usually use Xbox Media Center to play my movies. It can take a scene released movie that is in .tar (inside it a collection of .rars and inside those the xvid movie) or a movie that is split into many rar files and play it back.

It is able to parse though the rar files without unraring them on the hard drive (it's actually doing this by connection to a server on the host computer and streaming the data)

My question is do any media players support opening rar archives or tar archives without having to unrar them?

I tried VLC and Media Player Classic (installed with CCCP) but they don't natively do it.

Anyone else able to (without having the unrar the entire set of rars to get to the video file)?

Haven't seen a tar file since my irc days...What you are looking for would fairly demanding for a media player...I have never heard of one doing this , good luck in finding it...On another note try getting your files from newsgroups you download individual rars ...Most newsreaders (I use grabit) extract the rar files when you download the par2 file with the rars automaticaly....I ftp to my xbox and all is well....The original xbox is a great media center...Its to bad the cpu and the amount of ram in it limit it when playing back high definiton 5.1 content .....Its still great though :)

Yeah I love my XBMC.

Too bad no one has the application I'm looking for.

Thanks though

At the risk of hijacking the topic, I would like to ask a related question.

I have downloaded a movie and have got CD1 and CD2 all in small .rar's. Cant seem to find a way to convert/burn it to play on DVD.

Sure it is easy and maybe been asked before but I can't find it.

Any help appreciated.

sorry for asking this, but have you tried unpacking those rar files?

Good of you to reply. Yes I unpacked them as a batch and got 2 .avi files, but WinAVI just shuts down as soon as I load them. Have tried Nero EXPRESS but the sound is so far out of sync that they are unwatchable.

Thanks again.
