My girlfriend is leaving her job and will need to hand her computer back in a few days. She's on Win/XP.

I don't know anything at all about PC software and was hoping for recommendations on the best (free?) apps for entirely deleting all personal history and info from a system without actually wiping the drive. (there's company installed software)

Also if there are any reputable guides online that you can recommend for things to consider beyond what the software will delete I'd be very grateful. (I spent 30 minutes on Google but the privacy sector is slammed with commercial apps and spam so I didn't turn up much useful info)

Thanks in advance for your insights and experience!

Thanks for the pointers... I've just run CCleaner, CyberScrub, and SDelete so I think this drive is as squeeky clean as one can get. :D

I use eraser. It overwrites data as many times as you specify.

Firefox can automatically delete your history, cookies, cache, and others private data when you close your browser. Just go to Tools -> Options -> Privacy -> Private Data -> check "Always clear my private data when I close Firefox"

For wiping the "free" space this works well.

Tried Webroot's Window Washer? It cleans everything, but it is shareware. Google it and good luck!
