http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:ho0RNyz4wCJ4YM:http://www.netfaqs.com/macintosh/Browsers/OSX/Safari/MenuSafariPrefs.png" Apple said Monday that it would make its Safari Web browser available for Windows-based PCs, opening a new front in its rivalry with Microsoft.

The announcement came at the end of a presentation made by Steven P. Jobs, Apple’s co-founder and chief executive, at the company’s annual World Wide Developers Conference. It indicates that Apple is increasingly confident in its ability to compete against Microsoft’s desktop computing monopoly. "

Hmmm, yeah my itunes is a bit twitchy, but checkout the download link.

It claims to be the fastest compared to Opera, IE and FireFox for HTML, Java and App. launch.

Looks pretty strange but seems fast at first glance . Man I hate Quick Time , have yet to see an ad tho and imported my Fox bookmarks no problem .

I'm wondering about plugins , if I'll need any ?

I think it looks very cool. And according to Apple, Safari is the fastest web browser on any platform. So if it works out I'll defiantly make the switch. :D

yea i'm not too sure how I feel about this, and this is coming from a mac user. I mean I don't really see where they are going with this, from a business perspective how does gaining market share in the browser market help? the only thing that comes to mind is that this will somehow tie into the iphone, similar to how itunes made the ipod on windows possible.

regardless, safari is an awesome browser on the mac, and this new version seems even faster at rendering pages. I can't, however, speak for its windows counter-part but have heard it can be somewhat of a resource hog when it comes to ram.. so we will see what happens i guess.

So far it is a pretty browser. One thing I need to switch is to have User Profiles. If anyone knows how to set that up please tell me. I want it so my friend can have his own bookmarks, and his own home page, and I can have my own.

Low the smooth font :-p

Opps found a problem. Can't download NZB's from here. Downloads nzbfetch.php

This is stupidity. No one is going to use this browser, not to mention how disgustingly ugly Apple's software is.

apple are trying to push their software to try and improve hardware sales and compatibility.

If lots of people start using safari on windows and it gains a small/medium market share then web developers will have to support it. stops alot of headaches for apple with people complaining x site does not work with safari.

Meh, I'm gonna try it. Maybe after it matures they'll make a 'multi-plugin' (http://www.aqua-soft.org/board/forumdisplay.php?f=35) like itunes where you can skin it.

It's hardly ever updated tho' so

Currently using the safari browser to browse... :whistling

It is FUCKING fast :O

But to be honest, that's about all it has got going for it, apart from the anti-aliasing, and I like the way it highlights the currently-selected input field.

The greyness is boring though, and no tabbed browsing, and I'm a bit concerned about history/security, etc.

But I'm amazed that the sites I've developed seem to work straight off with it, which is nice (less of a development headache for me, anyway!)

Competition is good, and anything that eats into microsoft's market share is a good thing. Also, if it raises the bar on speed, then the other browsers will have to follow suit, which is also a good thing

EDIT: Found the tabbed browsing option :smilie4:

Well, every internet browser says they are the best browser. It's just marketing... i'm betting they aren't very different in speeds :/

Microsoft definitely needs Apple alive so they don't get in trouble for being a monopoly. Why else would Microsoft make Microsoft Office work for Apple? Without Microsoft Office, Mac OSX would be sh*t [/hyperbole].

This pdf you guys may find interesting... free download: http://www.workingpsychology.com/download_folder/GAM_Campaign_Analysis.pdf

Here's a quote from that booklet:
"The bedeviling problem for Apple, that runs beneath all its campaigns, is that Microsoft's Office applications - the lingua franca of the digital world - are central to keeping the Mac platform viable. So Apple-as-underdog has to attack carefully, and is safest when it doesn't mention Microsoft specifically. ... If any Apple attack is too strong, Microsoft might exercise its 'nuclear option' to stop making software for Mac. ... It's in Microsoft's best interest to continue moderate support for the Mac, with what's widely acknowledged as clumsy, bug-ridden software that runs (or limps) on the Macintosh platform" (5).

its a pretty fast browser. but the fonts are too bold for me and it does use alot of ram.

but one thing i found, is that when you push the middle click(or whatever you have it assigned to) to open a link in a tab from msn.com, it doesnt work, just like on firefox.

damn you microsoft.

I've installed it and yes it dows look pretty quick, I don't mind the Apple interface too much as I have used a few macs.

Firefox drives me nuts the amount it crashes and as for IE7 I'll keep my mouth shut, but hey I'll give it a little roadtest anyway.

Nice to meet you all too

If you talk to a MAC user they will tell you that the flaw with the start up is and has always been there. It's just a heavier program and takes longer to load. Most MAC users don't use Safari and immediately install FF. MAC users are smarter then Windows users in that sense. :O:P

Who knows they could speed it up for windows, but I know that MAC people have always said it takes longer to load.

I test drove Safari for a couple days and it wasn't anything special. Mind you this is just my experience personally but I found it was actually slower. I would like to think that it's because it's in the beta stage but if you ask me they should scrap the Safari on Windows idea and cut their losses.

Though one thing I did like about the browser is the look. Though a Firefox skin could replicate that. :naughty:

lynx

Crashed after 30 seconds.

It got to beta in this state? Doesn't say much for their alpha testers.
They'll have to do a LOT of work to get me to bother looking at it again.

Safari 3.0.1 Public Beta for Windows is now available and addresses
the following issues in Safari 3 Public Beta:

CVE-ID: CVE-2007-3186
Available for: Windows XP or Vista
Impact: Visiting a malicious website may lead to arbitrary code
execution
Description: A command injection vulnerability exists in the Windows
version of Safari 3 Public Beta. By enticing a user to visit a
maliciously crafted web page, an attacker can trigger the issue which
may lead to arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the
issue by performing additional processing and validation of URLs.
This does not pose a security issue on Mac OS X systems, but could
lead to an unexpected termination of the Safari browser.

CVE-ID: CVE-2007-3185
Available for: Windows XP or Vista
Impact: Visiting a malicious website may lead to an unexpected
application termination or arbitrary code execution
Description: An out-of-bounds memory read issue in Safari 3 Public
Beta for Windows may lead to an unexpected application termination or
arbitrary code execution when visiting a malicious website. This
issue does not affect Mac OS X systems.

CVE-ID: CVE-2007-2391
Available for: Windows XP or Vista
Impact: Visiting a malicious website may allow cross-site scripting
Description: A race condition in Safari 3 Public Beta for Windows
may allow cross site scripting. Visiting a maliciously crafted web
page may allow access to JavaScript objects or the execution of
arbitrary JavaScript in the context of another web page. This issue
does not affect Mac OS X systems.

Well in fairness that was a quick patch but why rename a " beta " ?
Here's a link to a topic about the patch :

http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/2192142/apple-plugs-safari-security

I'll say one thing , till it has a Spellchecker I'm giving it a pass . I post in blogs and forums and nothing worse than looking like an inbred .

@asmithz, sorry I just read your post again and see you posted about the patch . OoPS .

Guy's you have to install the patch manually , after downloading it has to be run from the start, program menu . Watch out for the Itunes and Quicktime shit tho . :dabs:
