The Demon Awakens- R.A. Salvatore

No twist at the end if i remember correctly, but still an amazing book :)
Its the first part in a series, but it has a "closed" ending so you do not need to read the rest (if you don't want to that is)

Confederacy of Dunces, a novel by John Kennedy Toole. One of the funniest books ever written, with a tragedy behind it. The author became despondent because he couldn't get it published and committed suicide; his mother later found the manuscript and vowed to get it published, which she did; the book went on to become a best seller and win a Pulitzer Prize.

My all time favorite book would have to be
Gates Of Fire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gates_of_Fire)
by Steven Pressfield (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Pressfield)
Gates of Fire is an historical novel about an elite group of 300 Spartan warriors which defied all odds and stood against the invading Persian army of millions of soldiers.
The battle took place at Thermopylae and was written in history.
this book takes an in depth look at how the society of Spartans was, how they were raised, what they believed, how they were trained to become the finest soldiers the world would ever meet, and finally it concludes with the detailed and thorough description of the battle and why it had such an importance for the Democracy and freedom of the whole of the western world. Everything is taken from facts that are written and found in old historic books of the ancient Greece, all over the world and with the help of Historic Professors from Universities around the world.
It would worth your time reading this book.

"Gone With the Wind" was one of my favorite books. Dostoevsky's "Humiliated and Insulted" was also good, though it was sad. Bulgakov's "Master and Margarita" was a really difficult book to understand; I mean, it was an easy read, but still was a difficult book to understand, if you know what I mean. I also liked Robert Howard's stories about Konan. "Headless Horseman" by Mayne Reid was a great book also...

It's not my best, but it's a series that I'm going through right now with much enjoyment.

Nightside Series by Simon R Green (Fantasy genre). The 12th book of the series is due for release this winter (hopefully). The first book was barely passable, and thankfully I kept reading (on book 6 atm). It's easy to read, funny at moments, creepy in others and generally a relaxing read.

1.The Collected Short Stories - Roald Dahl (These short stories are captivating and remain attached with you forever)

This is ridiculously difficult to answer with one book. In fact, I'm not going to do it.

1. Hyperion - An epic space opera written in the form of a frame story, similar to the Decameron or Canterbury Tales. Philosophical, poetic, transcendent.
2. Historias de cronopios y de famas - The product of an endlessly fertile imagination. You will be forced to think deeply.
3. Mythago Wood - Explores the darkest of mythology in a deep, disorienting forest. Mysterious and gripping all the way through.
4. Tao Te Ching - An insightful collection of statements by Lao Tzu regarding the universe and how to live within it. Immensely beneficial for smoothing away harmful habits and reflecting upon your actions in life. Go for the translation by Brian Browne Walker.
5. A Song of Ice & Fire (series) - By far the most exciting fantasy series I have ever had the pleasure of reading, and don't doubt for an instant that it will become known in time as a work of great fantasy literature, up alongside Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia. You really can't go wrong with this one unless you're illiterate.

Too difficult to pin down to just one...for an eye-opening "questioning Christianity in my twenties" read, I'd have to go with "The Mists of Avalon." Trying to re-read it now, but is at times too trite for my 39 year old mind to appreciate.

I will always stand by my classical favorite, "The Sound and the Fury," if only to sound obtuse and a bit boring.

For pure shock value, I love me some Anton LaVey and the Marquis de Sade.

To test this theory that books and movies are two entirely different things I attempted to watch Faulkner's novel The Sound and the Fury and found that although the cover was kind of retro-cool it didn't really go anywhere plus the FX were really lame.
After staring at the cover for 2 hours I figured it had to be over and turned it off by skipping to the back page/end credits.Thank Gawd for the ability to fast forward, huh.

I then proceeded to read Transformers 2 which was really, really difficult considering all the noise.

The first book that I read (after getting back into reading), enjoyed, and still recommend is The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. It's Young Adult but it is a good book to read. Since then, there has been more of course but this is the one that I remember as my first good book after getting back into the reading game.
