.avi is not a codec, it's a container format .
you can have avi files with xvid, divx or x264 codec and the extension would still be avi.
I recommend the KMPlayer or VLC if you dont want to mess around with codecs and filters (codec packs).
Otherwise MPC + ffdshow + coreavc (for x264) is a good option :D
Something Else

I use FFDShow, CoreAVC and Nvidia Pure Video. Everything runs sweet over here :D

Codecs? For what? I use mplayer :D, no need for codecs :whistling, it plays everything

it plays everything without a GUI , and MPUI is just lame. I dont think a guy who doesnt know the difference between a codec and a container format should use a media player controlled with command lines. besides mplayer is still under development
if you install ffdshow you can watch your movies with other players such as WMP, Zoom Player and the KMPlayer. and the that means freedom for the user. he can try all the different software, choose the one he likes best and maybe gain some knowledge.

VLC is by far the best. One: it is multi format, Two: it plays on PC and mac.

I always used K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. Never had a problem with it. And now I install CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack) for better mkv support. Although VLC is very good I don't like it's interface. I like to use BSPlayer with the MacOSX skin...:D

Use one of the k-lite codec packs if you are looking for codecs to play files, but to encode I stick with DivX 6.7.

To play it save just download VLC latest version and Combined Community Codec Pack, also look for Koepi's Xvid Codec as well.

I remember people debateing about this i think it was on TD most people were saying use VLC player but advised against any kind of codec pack due to they are full of bugs and can't be removed properly when the time is needed also it is best to stick to individual codecs not a bunch you don't need this was the debate by far everyone said use single codecs and not packs i don't use any pack the only thing i use is cor something and ac3 and something else to work with mkv files.
I'm going to look at that nvidia pure video it looks good im not sure what it does yet

I hate Codec packs. Normally full of garbage we don't need.
Xvid (codec), Ac3Filter & FFDShow does the trick for me ;)

I use CCCP for everything but x264 where i use CoreAVC instead cause it's the fastest x264 codec out there. And i play them in Mediaplayer classic. VLC is pure crap imo. Play a x264 movie in VLC and it won't play smoothly unless you have a very powerful computer.

I find that Hi-Def plays best with BSPlayer.
Codecs I'm using are CoreAVC, Nvidia Pure and FFD Show.
