View Full Version : How Do You Justify Stealing Copy Righted Property?

fugley

How do you justify to yourself the use of Kazaa. Every time you download movies, music, software or a book you are probably breaking the law. Not very moral is it.

Excuses I have heard include - "but I did pay to see it at the pictures as well" or "they were ripping people off anyway!" or "it's there so I'm gonna use it" (meaning the ability and apparatus to download for free, if illegally) or "unlikely you will get caught!" etc etc etc .....trust you get the picture.

Is it wrong? Please discuss!

I put my hands up and admit it.

Im a criminal.
Everything i download is illegal, pretty much, all i get is movie's and music.
Then again, maybe some of these artists don't mind.
Does that make it ok?

Im waiting for the inspector to walk through my door now.....

woe is me officer !!

i admit it but i had no malintent !!

I only steal from those who won't notice it. I won't steal from small bands or in-trouble game studios. I bought Thief 1 and Thief 2 but that didn't stop pirates putting Looking Glass Studios out of business.

I use freeware whenever I can and if I can't, then I'll pirate from the company least deserving of my money in my opinion (generally Microsoft).

In terms of music, I'll happily download from massive bands like INXS or Evanescence, but I buy CDs from smaller bands like Solas or Deaf Shepherd who need the cash - and I don't share the mp3s I make from the CDs.

I only pirate if I can honestly say I don't feel it is immoral to do so.

I justify it because I can't be afford to buy all the albums I want or afford to go see the latest films at the cinema or buy DVDs. I'm not saying it's right, it's just why I do it. I do in a way pay though, it's the only thing I use my broadband internet for so I'm not getting the stuff absolutely free.

Also, who wants to pay for stuff when they know other's are getting it for free? I could get on my moral high horse and ignore this and pay for the stuff but I couldn't afford to even if I wanted to.

Legality and Morality are entirely seperate issues.

The former is an agreed set of rules, as such is entirely objective. The latter is a matter of individual conscience and is entirely subjective.

One can quite easily break a law without having any particular moral issue. Basically as Lamsey outlined. He takes a moral stance, while being willing to break the particular law.

is it orthodox for the working classes to have broadband internet access in their homes on a home PC, downloading movies and music?

i admit to not stealing a thing. stealing would be to actualy take it from the source which somebody already has and made it available and legal for the people. if you downloaded a movie thats still in theatres thats not stealing. stealing is going in there with a camera and tapeing it. your just taking it from a willing criminal. Its like seeing somebody get mugged you had no part in the act but you seen it and you didnt say anything unless you do then you would just be a pussy. so ya

Lamsey makes an excellent point about computer games.

Computer games are often a marginal thing, particularly adventure games. By sharing these types of games, I my extinguish their future by making them unprofitable.

So please continue to buy your games retail, if you can. Thanks.

Ok but if we look ahead a number of years film companies might not see that there is the same return as there was and people might lose their jobs etc etc.

As soon as big companies smell decline for what ever reason they have to react.
You / me could be doin some poor laddy me chum out of their job!! Films being made for 100grand instead of 100 millions. Line get's a bit blurry then (think of the children of these employees)

Bottom line question is are we doin wrong?

It would be pretty cool if there was a scheme where you could send the artist / people in the factories what they get per CD.

It would only be about 10p per CD or something disgusting like that.

Punish the fatcats who close down factories, make workers redundant and then get multi-million dollar payoffs for their 'expertise'.

fatcats == parasites.

I buy what I download, I download to make backups of things I own as I am entitled to.

Example, books, I downloaded a few books, what happened to my real in paper books? Well, I bought them, expensive pieces of paper...
Then they ended up getting moldy and ruined...

Luckily I had my backup :-)

Anyway also how about

I bought flight sim 2002 pro, in germany, without multilingual settings...

The german translation was, to say the least, shitty...
Beenden means exit, close, leave, it ended up being the button to (open door)

So I downloaded CD1 only of fs2002 pro for the english version, and could actuatly play it, dont play it anymore but hey..

The multiplexes just mean that their friends at McDonalds etc have somewhere to push their cardboard non-food to a captive audience. So the amount of people that work in the cinema isn't equal to the people who work FOR the cinema.

Does a 12-screen cinema need more staff than 4 3-screen cinemas? If anything, it needs less.

i think the shite scrubber thing is a good point.

There is an excess amount of excrement produced as a result of people going to the cinema.
Im sure this arises from people eating popcorn or various other snacks from the handy stands placed for your pleasure at the entrance.
Also there is the fact that around most cinemas there will be a restaurant of some sort.

So the shite scrubbers are needed, like it or not.

Bottom line is.....These companies are there to make money, that's why we call them companies!
If there was no money in it, they would not do it :(

That is the fear on the grape vine, that somewhere down the line people will stop going to the cinema and hireing dvd/vids therefore movies will make no money, therefore we will kill our own form of entertainment in the same way fishermen have killed their trade!

Think of other small business from unrelated industries such as retailers, road building, house building, property prices rise, oh and we'll need another school and some policemen, (well maybe not). OH my giddy aunt - the multipimplex just aint big enough any more!!!!!!!!!! We need to build a humongousplexerama with quadruple the capacity. I do it because I've never seen the point in paying for anything when you can get it for free. Simple as that.

Do I feel Guilty? No, its a dod eat dog world and theres plenty of people with bigger teeth than me, and out of 4,552,213 users online right now, I can't be the only person who feels this way...

But I'm putting on my flame proof suite just in case..... :P

@CBB

Cinemas have been relatively unaffected by piracy. There is no difference in listening to a pirated music CD compared to one you've bought, but there is a huge difference between watching a movie on a monitor and watching it on the big screen.

Unless you have a 50ft monitor of course!

There should be a local patent office.....

but it costs money.

and the idea may already have been lodged my someone.

After seeing it on here, perhaps.
Better get moving i suppose if you want the chance......

Then again, maybe it wont take off.....

We are all criminal morons anyway for downloading all our illegal "things".
Morally and legally.

If more people like you were hired as greeters, celebs, then more people would be attracted to the cinemas anyway.

More and more people are getting bigger TV's, nicer dvd players.....

I always pay for movies that I want to see then I d/l em. I'm not doing anyone out of any cash because I would'nt pay to see a movie at the cinema twice (unless I really like it and then I'd buy the retail DVD when it was released.)

Same with the music thing. If I d/l something and like it then I'll buy the cd. If I only like 1 or 2 tracks then I wont.

It does'nt make it any less illegal but I dont care. Morally I know that what I'm doing is not hurting the movie/music industry or any company associated with it.

Unless the ppl d/ling from me have a different way of doing things.....

Loz does make a good point: As to buying the product after download, yeah, maybe not BUT :-

I too download movies and mp3s out of curiosity. Would I go out and buy, say, Legally Blonde? Not likely, but I have watched it, (look I was bored OK?!) :D But no way would that movie have generated any revenue from me whatsoever. I didn't go to the pictures to see it, I wasn't going to rent it, even on VHS. So looking at it that way, there was no lost revenue whatsoever from my download.

Since P2P has grown, so has my interest in movies. I watch more now than I ever did, because they are there. Take the free movies away from me, it won't mean I go out buying DVDs like there's no tomorrow! I'll just do what I still do, watch only the better films at the cinema, difference is I'll go back to ignoring the middle-of-the-road stuff.

If I really can't get hold of a movie I want, I'll do as always used to - I buy it (amazon marketplace or ebay, 2nd hand). The film industry has had no more and no less from me because of P2P.

As for music, hey, who remembers bow wow wow? C30,C60,C90 go? It's still a recording media! And there's still the record library! So no, the music industry hasn't lost my money either! If it's a small independant (this means not part of some EMI conglomorate) label, THEN I'll buy it, mostly because it's cheaper anyway, but yes, they do deserve my money.
