Gigabit Ethernet: Faster Than Fast Ethernet?

Gigabit ethernet is the revolution, it is 10 times faster than 10/100 fast ethernet, but does that matter if I only have 1.5 MB/sec dsl connection?

Will I notice the difference?

Nope. The only way you'll notice Gb ethernet is if you're hooked up to a LAN which has at least one other computer capable of Gb internet. If you're using a switch or hub then that needs to be Gb capable too.

Giga bit ether net is designed for networks with loads of pcs attachted to it. there is no currunt switch/hub that has 2 gig slots. the server pc is usually the one with the gigabit connection.

server pc attaches to network, it means that it can supple the network with a guarenteed ammount of data. improves pings etc.

curruntly u cant connect 2 gigabit ethernet pcs together.

there are quite a few boards now available with gigabit ethernet for residential use though

a good example is pentium's new board, it has onboard gigabit ethernet

not that it's hugely useful for lan gaming, it's too expensive just now to be of any real use.
stick to notmal 100mbps lan for now, unless you can afford the prohibitively expensive parts (bit of juxtaposition there :P )

I connected my PC to my kid's pc with regular LinkSys 10/100 lan cards. Very simple to do (especially in WIN XP).

The download speed is incredible. So your card should prove to be as good, if not, better!


By the way. Playing 3D games on LAN is extremely cool. So are web cams and video conferencing.

Gigabit costs $40 more than 10/100

a 10 port gigabit ethernet switch will set you back around £10'000 - compare that to a 24 port 10/100 switch at around £100 for a decent one, there is the need for CAT6 cable etc - it's not for the home market but for server rooms where terebytes of data are moved constantly, you can also get 10gigabit and 40gigabit ethernet but they use fiber and cost the same as the national debt for a small contry :P

most boards are still limited to 100mbps for transfer between hdd's.

however, the max sustained speed for reading (not writing) of my hdd is 300 odd mbps, and i've got an old seagate 7200rpm 2meg cache hdd
