Vista question

As of next week sometime, I'll have one each XP and Vista machine running, because I want a no-pressure learning curve for Vista.

I'll have a dual-core, 4G RAM setup for Vista Ultimate; I'm leaning towards Kaspersky 6.0 for AV-FW.

Can't really see anything out there better (or easier, which ATM is kinda big).

Thoughts?

I'm dual booting my laptop with win XP Pro and Vista Ultimate. I have 2 gigs of ram and run NOD32. Works like a charm.

I'm also using Norton Ghost 12 and backing up my drives every day just in case :)

Just remember, if it says something along the lines of, "This software has known compatibility issues with Vista" blah blah blah, be very careful. I completely fubared my Vista twice before finally figuring out all the quirks. Haven't had to reinstall in over a month now :)

I believe I've got the requisite paranoia to succeed with it; I lucked into a decent PC to use as an XP Pro workhorse while I play with Vista, so that any fubars shant be catastrophic.

I've also thought about dual-booting my laptop, but I think I'll get the other two sorted first.

Yes if you go to the folder on the dvd , think its called " install " and run setup from there . :ermm:

It'll be the WPI folder...I just have to somehow sort the progs that'll work with Vista from the ones that won't. :ermm:

For example, I now know to steer around Alcohol 120, right?

Your right buddy and don't forget software updates , a lot of programs work out of the box and cracks or serials still apply . Kav 6.0 for example . :D

Well, were you running a 64 bit version of Vista? I guess it works okay with 64 bit but NOT 32 bit. If you go to their site (Alcohol) it even says it's NOT Vista compatible. :)

Interesting, Virtual Body. Last time I looked, (a couple of months ago) it didn't support Vista and they said so right on their site. Obviously, they finally got out a Vista-supported version :) Thanks for the info :)

I was just looking recently and I saw Eth0 had released a slipstreamed Vista Ultimate along with their XP Pro monthly updates.


Since it's Eth0 and they decided to stick with the NoPe Vista image to keep slipstreamed, I'd choose NoPe's or this release as the best Vista to get.

Just a side note, i ran into the alcohol install fubar too, but that exposed me to vista's great recovery options from the dvd. First, it will scan and try to autocorrect any issues (NOT a full repair, quick scan and fix). If that does not fix it, the next time you go to the dvd it will give the option to restore to a restore point. Very usefull compared to the XP method of using the damn recovery console.

Long story short, vista fixed itself WITHOUT a re-install. So don't go off reinstalling vista right off the bat, check out the recovery options :)
