I have broadband too, but not XP.

This explains the confusion.

My broadband cannot be disconnected from my Win98 - unless i simply take the plug out of the cable modem and put it back in again - DirectConnect makes no difference if its on or not.
The broadband line is essentialy "online" 24/7 anyway, you can use your phone at the same time, its not like 56k.
Anyway, confusion explained.
Only kiddin scribblec, no offense taken bro ;) :D

It probably has to do with the lease time for your ip....
normally it's set to 2 weeks. If you login again within that time the server give you back the ip you had before...

btw of course it's not forbidden to tell him...

broadband doesnt disconnect mate - its on all the time. [/b][/quote]
Not Always.

I have a Westell DSL modem (with Verizon). I can disconnect and connect at any time. I never stay connected unless I need to.

My buddy has a cable modem, and has no easy way to disconnect (but he can if needed). Anytime he turns his PC on, he is automatically online.

Oh. I was informed by Verizon, that my IP number can change monthly, without notice, and that it would not affect my service.

yeah its the same with me mate, the confusion was found out!!

Im running Win98 and there is no way to disconnect it - just taking the plug out of the socket for the modem - there is no switch or action on my computer to disconnect it.

As i said before, broadband is essentially online all the time anyway, your cable modem just jumps onto the line and starts using it. At least i think this is the way it works. Correct me if im wrong !!! :D :D

I can't believe that no one in this whole thread has told this stupidguy that maybe he should modify his behavior in order to not get banned. That way it would not be a problem to fix.

I am not sure how long you keep the same IP with NTL, I was under the impression that it was 24 hours, then it changed.

If that is not the case then I am sure they will change it for you, or tell you how long the current "lease" lasts.

There may be a way to check this yourself, however I am not that knwolwdgable about this side. As Robbie 2 says you could always use a proxy. Either an NTL one or one of the many who supply a free service.

JP is correct - I've done it before just phone your provider and ask them to change the ip Telewest will do it and the call is local rate - don't know about ntl.

What NTL service are you using. I am certain that NTL Broadband policy, in the UK, is not to provide static IP's. Unless of course it is for a business where you may need one.

Are you on one of NTL's domestic Broadband services.

if you unplug your modem from all wires, leave it off for AT LEAST 5 hours and then reconnect - you MAY get a new IP - i'm on NTL but can't remember what the lease times are - but unless someone else takes your IP you'll just get the same one again when you reconnect the modem to NTL's network, this is due to the way that DHCP works

As other people have said - if you don't get yourself banned you won't have to change your IP

My DHCP status counts down from 24 hours, that's why I assumed that it was a new IP every day.

I was also told they do it for security reasons, more difficult to hit a moving target sort of thing. That ties in with what I am told of telewest which is also 24 hour changes.

Another thought occurs however. If you are using an NTL proxy then is there any need for the IP to change as any traffic comes through the proxy. Could this be why you have had the same IP for so long.

In Win98, doesnt winipcfg release your IP?

If I release, wait a couple of minutes then renew.....I get a different IP.

If I release then renew immediately, I renew my lease on the old IP...(effectively making it static if i do it 1st thing every morning)

This is Telewest though, they may have different lease's on the IP....

I havent got XP...but isnt ipconfig the same thing?

Suppose would be right speed compared to mine....

They (NTL) bumped me up from a 128kbps to 150 without asking !
can u believe that !?
i mean its only another 2 or 3 quid a month but you'd think they would at least ask !!

i hit 24/27k/s max.

Havn't read all the posts so just ignore this if your question has been answered already.

A. Leave your computer disconnected for 24 hours and the IP will re-set itself.

or..

B. Ring them up and tell them that you think someone dodgy has got your IP
addy and your worried they may do something to harm your computer.
They may change it, may not.

It must be whether someone else takes it. If you stay on line you keep the same IP for the length of the "lease". Like I say I think it is 24 hours

I released my IP, effectively going off line, when I was going away from my PC. I renewed on my return about 15 minutes later and got a different one. Presumably someone had taken the old one in the meantime.

So for anyone on NTL it would appear to be fairly straight forward. DHCP release, have a nice cup of tea and perhaps a cake. Then renew. With any luck you will get a different IP.

That was a joke, almost......

1GB a day cap?

im hitting nearly a gig on my 150 - 600k and 1mbit users must be going thru the roof - it was never going to work.
Half the people i told about it never even knew - it was released in a hush as it was never going to work.
I even think its still supposed to be in place.

What, we were supposed to get an email if we exceeded a 1gig limit every day for 2 weeks or something laughable like that?

213.107.224.5
213.107.224.6
all ntl proxys

Dude,
just unplug and replug your modem in. Your modem sends out a request for an ip evrytime you conect. eg. when the modem is on. The isp then sends you one. At least thats how it works on dsl. It should work with cable however.

doesn't have to be this way... the server checks and if it recognize your macadress (from the router or the network card) it often gives back the old (same) ip adress...!

You can change your i.p address on cable by a couple of ways depending on which o/s you are on.

win98/se unplug cable modem then go to start/run and type winipcfg then press release all. then restart machine/plug modem back in.
voila new i.p address

winxp pro/home/corp/media edition/fridge edition etc.... unplug cable modem
go to start/run and type in "cmd"
then type in ipconfig/all to see your i.p config

then type "ipconfig/release"

2 ways of finishing are

turn on modem and type "ipconfig/renew"

or exit command window and restart machine plugging in modem

you CANNOT change your ip address by simply turning the modem off and on.
the o/s needs to restart so that it can be assigned a fresh i.p address

I called blueyonder tech help for this and i know for a fact these instructions are the same for ntl EXCEPT when the person does not have a cable modem but has connection from back of digital cablebox. then you need to unplug digital cable box
instead of cable modem.

incidentally if you find you are being attacked a lot - change your i.p a lot !!!

last thought is - if you are "banned" are you sure it is i.p based and not cookie based ???/

If you're lucky enough to have a dynamic IP, then you can disconnect and reconnect, but if you have a static one, then you can't disconnect, you're STUCK with it.
