I have not heard too many of the modern guitarists. When I was young Jean Django Reinhardt was recognized as the best player ever. I liked Waylon Jennings who played for Buddy Holly and later became a big country star in his own right.

tom morello (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Morello) is my favorite by far. i love the groove to his playing. he also approaches the guitar in a unique way which is probably best for setting him apart from other axe-slingers.

'who is your favorite guitar player' would've been a more appropriate title then. i really dislike serious 'best guitar player' discussions: too subjective. if you look at one aspect of it like speed or innovation then that type of stuff can be rated i guess, but 'best' is too general to rate imho.

It depends on the genre and the taste. I love such weirdos like Buckethead or Les Claypool (on bass). Pat Metheny, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Al Di Meola, Zakk Wylde, Tsuneo Imahori...they are my favourites, true legends.

@fletcher, did you imply that you need a pick to be good?

hands down best guitarist of our time is jeff loomis, all the styles he plays are amazing and im an open minded guy, but my mind's made up about the topic of "best guitarist"

currently learning the solo to "born", jesus christ how can someone play that fast that clean and make it sound good instead of a slur of notes

note: i said of our time, he IS the next jason becker

I tell you how: He plays on his instrument even on the toilet since he was 5 or so. Thats the secret of speed.

Easily my favourite is Brian May. Hes a pure genious on the guitar. Has his own distinct sound and a one of a kind guitar. Author of "We will rock you", "Tie your mother down", "The show must go on", "I want it all", "Who wants to live forever" just to name some of many classics hes done.

Easily deserves the status of legend and definately up there with the best of them, even perhaps arguably the best guitarist ever.

Oh, me like this thread, at the same time - i hate it yup

I just think its all to hard to throw in names and name the player best guitarist ever. But ill give it a shot. When defining best player I would like to know if best player means fastest, best groove, coolest riff creator etc etc. But anyway... here is some ideas.

Frank Zappa - The one and only, great shredder, awsome solos, and still he's making great music.

Neil Young - Anyone played this beutiful exept for him?

Hendrix - He is considered the best amongst many music critics, not to say most music critics, and couldn't agree more.

Kurt Cobain - ever heard a wonderful solo from him? I sure as hell havn't. Ever heard any extreme lick where you've been thinking "how the hell does he do that"? I havn't. Still he's created some of the best riffs ever.

Steive Ray Vaughan - Scuttlebutin', need I say more?

BB King - Blues at it best.

Jimmy Page - Probably my favorite of all time, got it all. Some even say that he's a wizard, because how can one be that good at the guitar and not be a wizard? (What parts of the body did you think with during the 70s?)

John Frusciante - One bend, ten seconds. Thats all the solo you need man!

Some random namedropping
Buckethead
Santana
Townsend
Dylan
Cuck Berry
Tom Morello
Gilmore
Malmsteen (well he's fast anyway)

I could not finish this post without mentioning the anti-solos father Andrew Gill of the Gang of Four.

Stay music people!

My god, I am so sick of Hendrix. He most def is not.

I understand people saying Slash because he improvises most of those solos he creates.

I surprised nobody mentioned Dimebag Darrel or Steve Vai.

There is no best. However, there certainly is an elite group.
