I have an Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170S ATA Drive and when i put a Sony DVD-RW disc in it reads it really slow and makes my computer freeze for a bit then when it burns the files, it does not burn them properly onto the disc. My laptops drive reads it normally and burns it normally, i am very confused! Anyone know what the problem could be?

Stop putting Sony discs in your drive*- try a different brand and see what happens.

*Just to be safe- destroy every thing you own made by Sony, they are the Devil's work and will cause no end of trouble. A stake through the heart and cutting off the head are the only safe method.

Sony is involved with the drive also: http://www.sonynec-optiarc.com/ :pinch:

You could check to see if the drive is working in DMA mode in Device Manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

- Press both the Windows key and the Pause/Break key on you keyboard at the same time.
System properties window pops up.
- Click the Hardware tab.
- Click on [Device Manager] button.
- Click the + of the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
- Right click and select the properties of IDE channel that your burner is on and click the Advanced Settings tab.

See Current Transfer Mode:?

you can also check to see if you have the latest firmware

the 7170s has a sata interface and the 7170a has the ide interface

I buy the Maxwell brand Dvd R in bulk and don't remember a problem with any in the last two hundred , yet that site rates it in the # 2 column .

Emtec Dvd-rw are what I use with great success for back ups .

The flash tool is usually included in the download, it always has been for me in the past.

and is it worth the risk? What risk? All of these firmwares will have been implemented by hundreds of people, problem versions would have been quickly withdrawn, and in any case there should be nothing to prevent you from reverting back to the original version.

I've never had problems with custom firmwares.

I'v done it on two Devices which by no surprise were both Sony's, had no trouble tho it's like a updating a driver .

Can't say you won't but just make sure its the proper version and you should be fine . Use as a last resort tho . :)

Here's a link for other brands as well :

what were the reasons for doing this? did you have similar problems to me and did it work after the update? and also can i use the flash tool in vista?
