The only thing i dont understand about hotmail is why do so much people signup for it when they can get better service and more storage at yahoo. In yahoo they give u up2 30 mb of storage in ur briefcase and hotmail doesnt even have a briefcase. i can understand the briefcase problem that yahoo is an all rounder and hotmail is just an email service. But everywhere i go i c ppl using their hotmail address. WHY????

I've had my hotmail account sinse I came on the net, when I didn't know any differant. The only reason why I never changed it is because I have all my msn contacts under the same address.

I do have a couple of others though.

Hotmail works just fine for me, i use it for boards etc plus i let all the junk come in there. For private matters and friends etc i have my own mail provided by my ISP. No need for Yahoo really..... :)

Yahoo is far more insecure than Hotmail. When you enter your password with yahoo it is sent in plain text via HTTP. When you enter your password with hotmail it is automatically encrypted via HTTPS. This means that anyone on your LAN, or at your ISP can 'sniff' your yahoo password. You can enter the password via HTTPS in Yahoo but you have to select the option each time you login which I find rather tedious.

It's also a matter of principle. Every year or so a huge child porn ring is exposed usually with a yahoo group being the 'front door' to it.

When was the last time you heard of a hotmail club being used in that manner?

I can explain why a good chunk of Hotmail users use it in one post.

Plain and simple - MSN Messenger. AFAIK, MSN Messenger requires a Microsoft .NET passport. And what do you need for a .NET passport? A hotmail address. In other words, to use MSN Messenger you need a Hotmail account.

But that in itself begs another question - Why use MSN Messenger if Hotmail is crap? Put simply - Because out of the four major alternatives to MSN, 2 are the software version of scumbags and the third isn't the most user-friendly. Here's what I mean ICQ - USED to be a good alternative to MSN...until AOL Time Warner bought it and uploaded god knows how much crap onto it. ICQ's now known as a scum-ridden program of spyware & adware, which is a shame considering that it used to be a great IM :( AIM - AOL Instant Messenger. Enough said. You want more? Check out the problems with ICQ above - Different mechanics to them, but their owners have the same principles for both (mainly because they have the same owner). Oh wait, there is one major difference - ICQ used to be good then went crap, AIM always was crap ;)
Which leaves MSN, Yahoo! and IRC. IRC is not the most user-friendly - I have trouble myself learning all the workings of it. Yes, it's more powerful than MSN or Yahoo!, but I hardly see that many using all the features of MSN anyway, so what'd be the point?

This leaves MSN and Yahoo! - "The cosmetic IM kings". This boils down to a turf war in the end - Some like MSN, others like Yahoo! I think that because MSN sticks to only certain things "which it's good at" instead of going all around the block like Yahoo!, most people prefer MSN. But seeing as I haven't tried Yahoo! (or AIM for that matter), I can't be sure.

But what the hell do I care - I personally use Trillian! :D

I hope that kinda explains why a lot choose MSN.

isnt it just because its easy?

<bangs head on wall> Sometimes I just wonder if there's ever an explanation which BOTH explains it in full for the interlects and simple for the rest.

Okay, I'll cut it down - There's five major IMs. Here's what's wrong with the current selection ICQ - AOL bought it, full of spyware AIM - AOL's own-brand IM. Enough said IRC - Too complex for those who just want to use the basic functions of IMs
That leaves two left - MSN & Yahoo! That leaves a turf war - MSN vs Yahoo! These are which most IM users (most of which do not have enough computer knowledge to know about IRC) use these two. Which require their own-brand email services to use them; figures  MSN is considered an IM with more features than Yahoo!, hence is more popular - Fact. That's why a huge chunk go for Hotmail accounts over Yahoo! mail accounts.

Does that explain it for everyone? I'll start building sock puppets if there are still a few confused ;)

I use Hotmail for a pretty stupid reason.....asthetics.
It looks better. Yahoo, however better or worse it may be technically, has shit for an
interface and site design.
I also used to chat quite a bit, and because I value looks so highly, I dislike using IRC,
and Yahoo's chat looks as dull as IRC, except it's got a big red "Y" on it.
Actually, I have 5 or 6 Hotmail address...because back when I chatted all the time
I got banned alot. :o
It's kind of odd though, some of my addresses get lots of junk mail, but two of them
only recieve stuff from the MSN staff. Ever.

ROFL - Pardon me if I'm ridiculiing here, but this just made me laugh. A few years ago they said the same thing about the serial number systems that many developers mistakedly still prefer (though their stupidity is our gain :D). Now, the latest versions of about 90% of all software which use serials are floating around at least one P2P network, though not necessarily FastTrack.

Pardon me if I accidently stray back to the original question for a moment... ;)

I have both a Yahoo and a Hotmail account.

In my experience, Yahoo's junkmail/bulkmail filter does a much better job of filtering out the garbage - so I actually prefer it over Hotmail.

But as a dial-up user, the fact that I can pull my Hotmail messages through Outlook Express and thereby read and compose messages OFFLINE is convenient.

I think Yahoo perhaps has a way of doing this as well, but not with just the basic setup.

Edit: Oh, back to the goofiness...How 'bout Mostly Shit aNyway :P
