Cd Speeds

ok, i got a memorex 52/24/52 cd burner and ive used all sorts of burnin progs(ner0,r0xi0, ect..) but i still get low burnin speeds 8-12, i run win98 128mb and i run nothin else but the prog....wat am i doin wrong?

Have you enabled DMA in the device manager? Right click on the CD drive icon in device manager and go to properties. Choose DMA And I think you have to reboot to see a difference. Make sure you have 80 conductor IDE cables, not 40. If you can, make sure the CD rom is on a separate IDE from the hard drive.
Other things can affect burn speed too. Cheap disks and even "good" disks are often over rated.
Cabs and zips burn slower than common files. Watch the speed in some programs and you'll see the slowdowns and speedups with different data types.


Have you changed the file system properties in system/advanced/file system ?
There's two choices, desktop or server. The server file system will give you a slight improvement in some areas. You may not even notice a change but it's worth a try.

You writing to RW's or R's?? If its RW's you will be getting this low speed, if its R's then try a different make!

do you know how much of your physical ram nero uses whilst you're burning a disc?
open task manager when you're burning and it'll give you an idea how much of your ram is being used.
my nero uses between 75 and 85 MB of my ram, so if you only have 128, you may be running out of physical ram. this would slow performance down noticably.

also, do you know how much free ram you have when your computer is idle?
if not, task manager will give you an idea

if you have any free ram slots on your motherboard, you may want to think about investing in some more ram

p.s. the task manager display won't work in win98, it doesn't show up free ram

how do i find out wat type of cable, its not connected to hard drive too

The top image is a 40 conductor IDE cable. The lower one is 80 conductor.
The 80 has a higher data tranfer rate than the 40.

You should have one separate cable on each drive/ IDE and both set to master or Cable select( if your bios supports it) with the drive jumpers

my hard drive has a 80 cable and my cd drives have 40, what should i do? can i switch the cable?

It will want to restart after selecting DMA.

Is that what you mean? If it's something else, can you post a screen shot? Or type out exactly what it says.

How old and what size is the hard drive? It's remotely possible on some brands that there might be a jumper for DMA along with the Slave/Master/CS settings or on a small circuit board near those. If it's a newer WD or Maxtor it should be a system setting.

No don't switch cables. just pick up a newer one asap. the 40 would bog down your hard drive. you need the same transfer speed on both for a good burn speed.

If your hardware can handle the speed then yeah you should. I'm not sure what the DMA mode limit is on 40 but 80 supports something like UDMA-4 or better. My old SCSI drive likes the 80 a lot better but it depends on a lot of things. In canadian $ you're looking at about $10 - $20 unless you can find a throw away from an opened box at some PC parts store.

i got the 80pin cable, now its hooked up to both my cd-drives and that is all attached to one of the ports on mobo, the hdd is attached to other port on mobo

How's your burning speeds now? Much improvement? There's not a lot more you can change now aside from a few bios settings.

now the jump from 20-40x i guess thats normal, i think the cds burn at 48x o ya, and im on a network and when i burn a cd from the other comp it takes like 20min, is that normal?

make sure cache network files is on, then it will copy the files to your computer then burn them, instead of copying from the other computer, or u could manually copy them over?

I dunno if I did the math right but it looks like you have a transfer rate of 553 kilobits p/s which is pretty good. That's based on a 650 mb transfer.

yea its faster now, it stays at 40-50 i think it just needed to adjust
