Not all isps offer news servers, and when they do they come nowhere close to the quality of the kind you'd have to pay for.

But yeah, if you can afford (or want) to pay for the quality of a good news server, then yeah, they are good. Worth it? That's up to you.

Personally, the idea of paying to steal just makes me giggle.

Paying $15/month for unlimited downloading, 100% maximization of your internet speed 100% of the time, zero seeding, etc., etc., etc., makes you giggle? Almost no one who tries it goes back to the torrent life. :snooty:

What's really absurd is paying for a seedbox, instead of a news server. :frusty:

Personally...

The idea of leaving my pc on 24/7 - 7 days a week 365 was kinda annoying, that costs. Then deciding to buy a server to boost yer ratio is the way, then if that don't work out, donate to and become a VIP member to your fav bt site.... aye so no cost in Bit torrent either then eh? Unless... you are some kinda Demonoid leecher? :ermm:

So all you bt' lovas can come out your ivory tower now.

That just makes me fart-out-loud. :pinch:

Yeah, I think the seedbox thing is rather absurd as well.

15 dollars a month though? What's the retention like and how much can you download?

I mean, I'll admit, it does look tempting. But on giganews the only thing I'd consider getting is the platinum one, which is 25$ a month - something I can't afford right now. Maybe if I had just a little bit more to spare. ;)

What's the content like on newsgroups anyways? I've generally had no problem with bittorrent or some smart googling when I wanted to find something really obscure. But because of the retention on newsgroups I've always doubted I'd be able to find all the things I'd want.

Edit: Aw, come on. I'm no leech, though I do mainly use demonoid because it has more content. (And I have a good ratio on there, too, damn it.)
I don't have a problem with leaving my computer on to share back, but eh, different strokes and all that.

I use Newshosting which is 14.95/month with 70 days retention. You could go with Giganews, but who really needs 120 retention? I never have.

As for finding all the things you want, you'll find 95% of it. Even if you don't, you always have bittorrent sites as a second resource.

Newsgroups is great for me for all the little perks. Example: I work evenings, so I need to download a lot of the TV shows I like to watch. With bittorrent, I was always downloading those shitty "HDTV" versions of shows. Who gives a shit if it's HDTV if it's only 400x300? By the time I enlarge it, the quality sucks. I never wanted to download the 720i/p versions or the x264 versions, as an hour long TV show is like 2.4GB or something. With newsgroups, I download those shows in 720 or x264 in like 20 minutes and never have to care about seeding.

Good advice Mr Skizo.

I'll be honest though, still use BT for my music, usually procured in album format from a pig based web site... that's it mostly though.

That little piggy is a good thing to have in your repertoire, indeed.

I find that Soulseek still works great for music as well, and again, no ratio bs.

I find that they compliment each other. Newsgroups, Soulseek, and finally bittorrent to bring up the rear.

Alright, I just fired up newsleecher again. You made a good point about the tv shows. One last annoying question though, is it any good for documentaries like the stuff released by the MVGroup? I'm kind of a huge nerd.

My isp offers a somewhat crappy news server, so I might as well gives newsgroups another shot.

Even if you have to pay ($15), usenet is still pretty great and definitely worth it.

In my case though, I get 80-95 day retention and max speeds all the time (using a small hack to allow more connections than set by the ISP).

turning you pc on and off will use more power and break the thing faster than just leaving it on and if we dont seed then we are paying our ISP's for wasted bandwidth not used.

07-08-2007, 06:46 AM
I prefer torrents to usenet, and yes I have had experience with usenet. I used my isp's newsserver for about 1 or 2 years before I finally just got sick of it and switched over. The retention was horrible and I had to constantly download par recovery files to restore missing parts. I also almost always get better speeds off of sites like SCT. I know I could get a pay service with better retention and complete files, but I'd rather download from a fast private tracker for free. I don't hate usenet though, and I'd definitely still use it if bittorrent had never been invented.
